So i am trying to make my way into AoS.And i have a question about rend.

So for example: Model 1 doing 3 attacks with 3 damage with -1 rend to Model 2. Model 2 has +3 save . so according the rules to make a save roll i need to subtract - 1 from the save(armor). So i have 2 save now. Now i need to roll 2 or higher as i understood to perform the actual save.

But heres comes my question: feels like this rend makes my own attacks harder to come through since if i havent had rend i would have bigger "window" (1-3) for successful attack. But since i have -1 rend i have 1-2 window and it gives bigger window (2-6) to negate the wound.

I feel that i might understood rules somehow wrong , can you guys explain this to me?Would be nice to have an example of how save roll with rend modifier should work properly?

P.S. Sorry for my english ,its not my native language.

Rend works a different way

Say you have a 4+ Save on one of your models and the enemy as 3 attacks with -1 rend and 1 dmg on his attacks.

All 3 attacks go through and hit your guy, so you have to make 3 saves with 5+ (cause your save get worse by one).

Then if you fail some of your saves the model would get damage.

Hope it is clear now

Thanks for response!
Oh so ,rend number is incease number of save.
I have one more question then , what should i do if there is for example -2 rend attack hitting me and i have 5+ save, its automaticaly counts as wound?

Yeah it makes your save worse. So -1 rend make a 4+ to a 5+ and a 5+ to 6+ and so on^^.

If you have a 5+ save and you would get hit by a -2 rend you don't get a save, until you have other special abilities like plaguebearers that can prevent them.

Rend, and any other modifier, effects the roll result not the stat line of a warscroll. So like Darksider said, Rend reduces your roll by what ever the Rend amount is. If it's Rend -1 then your 6 becomes a 5, a 5 becomes a 4, ect.

The same happens for any roll to hit or wound. if you have something that triggers on a roll of 6, like Mortal Wounds, with a -1 on the attack then you can never trigger the ability as the highest you roll is a 5.

Also keep in mind re-roll happen BEFORE modifiers are applied. So if your Save is a 3+ with re-roll failed saves and the attack has Rend -1 you can re-roll the 1s and 2s but your 3s succeed. After the re-rolls the Rend is applied and then any rolls of a 1 2 or 3 fail.

Wow, the reroll before modifiers thing is new to me, that makes a huge difference in some cases. Guess I need to read the new Generals Handbook 2017; or was that already in the old GHB? So out of practice....

I believe it's in the core rules, just wasn't very clear until it was brought up in an FAQ.

2000 Khorne Bloodbound (Skullfiend Tribe- Aqshy)
1000 Tzeentch Arcanites (Pyrofane Cult - Hysh) in progress
2000 Slaves to Darkness (Ravagers)
