Played my first game of 8th. We didn't know exactly how this worked. Can you please reference page numbers would be appreciated. He started one of his tanks on a building. It wasn't on the ground. I thought they could start there but had to end their first turn on the ground. He thought it didn't have too.

We can't find the rules so just curious what is the correct way and what page numbers we should be looking at so we know for sure.

First a "building" would be a model and you cannot place a model on top of a model even if it's a flyer.

So I assume we're talking about "ruins" in which case he has to end his move on the ground floor. It's in the BRB under ruins, and while there is no rule saying a vehicle cannot be deployed on say the 3rd floor of a ruin...well you play how you want I'll keep my personal opinions about folks who do shenanigans like that to myself.

"Buildings" are models(especially fortifications); so cannot have any models on top of them to begin with.

If you are meaning a terrain piece that is "building-shaped" and you guys are allowing models to stand on, then it still depends on whether you are using just the core rules or battlefield terrain rules.

Core rules would allow a vehicle to stay on top, get off, or get on.

Battlefield terrain rules would use "scratch built terrain" and can do whatever you and your opponent agree upon.

Thank you Kommissar Kel. Greatly appreciated. We just played, "let's learn the rules" so didn't play points just what we had. I had like 24 Stealers and a Tyranid Prime. Prime was held in reserve with 5 stealers. Never came on the board.

He had 3 or 4 groups of Salamanders with two tanks.

I had an Age of Sigmar Chaos wall and he placed his tank (forget the proper name 14 wounds is all I remember, not a Land Raider, had a bull dozer on it). We didn't really call it anything. So I guess "building shaped".

Will look into battlefield terrain rules. Thanks for showing me where to look.

You need to agree with your opponent pre-game on all terrain.

Of course, if that was his first instinct in a friendly "learn the rules" game you might have a job on your hands there!!!

We tend to go with logical things like tanks can't climb walls or vertical surfaces, but that's a house rule.

I'd also suggest using the Matched Play Tactical Reserves rules - that way you don't need to roll if they come on or not!

For all starter games it is best to first play "Open Play", Core Rules, and Power Levels. In this way you get a rough gauge of army strengths, do not have to worry much about fiddly terrain rules(nothing can move through any terrain, fortifications are part of your army and are generally vehicle-building models, everything can climb terrain) or points costs and the rules are all just basic simple how-to-play
