So me and my friends might be making a space wolves army but instead of the bluish grey they classically have we decided on a black base coat because it would look cool and because black is relatively easy to paint.

So I was wondering anyone have a reference we could look at or any tips/ paints we should use to paint these guys.

Thanks a bunch

May be worth checking out Hersey era SW, they had much darker grey armour with a hint of blue. Much better then the current baby blue counter part.

Painting black can be easy. I've used two methods to varying success. First one I tried was basecoat black with a spray can (or poor persons airbrush.), then from 45 degreeish angle sprayed the top of the models with a grey can. Followed this with a wash and presto. Used this on my DC which I have some pictures in my albums.

Second method is actually using a very dark grey. With a touch of null oil over top turns it near black. Drybrush with a dark grey and this gives you a quick black scheme that won't look to flat.

Granted I'm no master painter but I hope this help.
Best of luck in the endeaver.

They are going to look like Black Templars with ruinic armor and Space Wolf Heads. They will needs some attention to detail to be different from other Black Armored Marines.

I'd say base coat with a Dark Gray and Apply a Black Wash to the whole model. Paint traditional Space Wolf Squad markings on the armor.
Or paint all black an highlight with a gray like this
