Another dumb question from my newbie self, but can I get cover off of being behind another ally unit? Do they have to be clearly larger or same size?

No. Cover only comes from area terrain now. Not even LOS blocking blocking terrain grants cover anymore.

yes! you can but you also have to be in an area terrain. If your unit is in terrain and at least 50% obscured from the firing unit you can claim cover. this obscuring can come from terrain pieces or other units. When determining line of sight a model ignores other models in the same unit, but not models in other allied or enemy units.

of note is that terrain rules are individual for different terrain types, such as ruins, barricades, craters etc. They are all similar in the way they require you to be in or near a terrain piece to use it, and 50% obscured to gain cover bonus. Infantry tend to get cover bonus without the 50% obscured requirement.

The 50% obscured is ONLY for vehicles. Infantry just has to have their entire unit touching the terrain feature.

Not only vehicles, that is false. What you should say is any unit but infantry. infantry tend to claim cover with less restrictions, but alll other unit types (monsters, bikers, cavalry, vehicles etc) has harder requirements.
It all depends on if you are using advanced terrain rules or not. At the basic level all terrain does is that it gives cover to any units within them. In that case there are no rules for obscured targets.
When you add the advanced rules for terrain, different terrain types have rules. Ruins and woods can benefit units that are obscured and within that terrain piece. Craters and barricades however only benefit infantry. If you have the rules book. read the advanced rules section. Then decide with your opponent if you prefer simple or complicated terrain rules.

If you want to take the terrain rules even further you can add their suggested "cities of death" expansion where the relative height of ruin floors can deny cover to enemys on lower levels. And staying in the same ruin for more thatn one turn gives +2 cover saves....

I disagree with Gitdakka.

The rules are pretty clear that a unit must be 100% within a terrain feature to benefit from basic +1 armour save from cover.

A model is unable to be placed on another model during the course of the game, so by default - this would prevent a unit from being "within" another unit to benefit from cover.

Gitdakka said your vehicle has to be within area terrain, but the "obscured" part doesn't have to be from terrain, but can be from other models. No argument was made that you could get cover without terrain.
