Im looking to get back in. Unfortunately when i last played 5th i sold my IG army. That being said money wise which army would be able to build the best competitive army while keeping costs down? Id like to buy new models to pain to my liking.

Thanks

Either of the starter set armies would be fairly close to, if not the cheapest armies to start. You can get either half off of eBay, or find someone local to split the box with.

I agree. Dark Imperium is a great way to get in the game with primaris or death guard. My primaris force right now is two starter sets, a dreadnought, and librarian. It’s fun.

I just mentioned this in another thread, but two betrayal of calth sets will get you 60 marines with lots of weapon options, ten terminators, two contemptor dreadnoughts and four HQs. Organize the marines into squads of your choice Tactical, Devastator, Command, Sternguard, choose a chapter tactic and get playing fast.

Excellent add on is the devastator kit, which comes with 12 more heavy weapons. 2 each of multimelta, H-Bolter, H-Plasma, Lascannon, Grav Cannon and Missile Launcher. Two of these kits on top of the Calth kits gives you an ocean of guns.

Not to everybodys taste, but if I had to start again from scratch I might go with that.

If you want a 'competitive ready' army for cheap, as above stated, get Dark Imperium.

If you wanna REALLY get competitive fast, get Dark Imperium, along with the box set with Gulliman inside it. Be prepared to lose friends when playing him, however.

Adeptus Mechanicus starter set is silly good value.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

How are Tau fairing in this edition? I am finding myself drawn to them more than other armies. How does the Adeptus Mechanicus army play? I left before they ever came out.

The problem is that Adeptus Mechanicus is horrible as an army right now, and will likely only get worse as more codeces come out. It also doesn't help that one of the more important units in the army comes in only a little better than $1/1 point.

Tau are currently down towards the bottom of the heap, but they have not gotten their codex yet. They and the Craftworld Eldar were kind of "top dogs" of last edition (not counting Marines because even though Marines are consistently strong, they rarely seem to get actually nerfed) and their Index lists were excessively weak, probably to build up confidence for 8th from people sick of getting stomped by them.

The Eldar codex is coming out and seems to fix a lot of the problems with their index and make them a good contender again, I would bet we'll see similar things with Tau, but at the present moment they aren't incredible.

The Tau start Collecting box is one of the best values though, something like 5$ more than a box of Crisis suits gets you a box of Crisis suits AND a box of fire warriors AND an ethereal.

Admech are an elite, mostly shooting, fairly durable army that relies on smart use of a set of army-wide buffs called "Canticles of the Omnissiah" that allow you to flex your force into different playstyles in-game. You can, for example, declare your whole army to be in cover for the turn as they all burn their sacred incense. Or if you're about to get charged, you can turn on a lightning field canticle to zap things that come into contact with your models.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Agreed, Tau are pretty poor at the moment - but their Start Collecting box is excellent and I very much doubt they'll be useless when their Codex is released. By the time you assemble/paint that stuff their Codex will probably be out. Wouldn't be a bad bet.

Compeitive for cheap? Easy. Buy 5 lemon russ and a baneblade.

Well, IG must be out then.

Since everything is cheap in points, the army costs a lot in money.

you want to do a space marine army any chapter you feel comfortable with will be fine space marines. Are a good army to start and a good army to stay competitive if you do end up collecting space marines id recommend dark imperium. This is a must have for you. A lot has changed since 5th edition with dark imperium you'll be able to slide smoothly back into 40kjavascript:emoticon('');

5 russ and a baneblade is under 400 bucks and depending on loadout could be a 1500 point army that is also extremely powerful. Just add some infantry and company commanders and you have one of the best armies in the eddition for around 600 dollars.

What army do you want to play?

The very last hotness was ultra smufs with grandaddy rowboat and a bunch of marines

you can get second hand marines for dirt cheap on ebay.

otherwise if you are looking for guard again you could fill up on lemons, possibly a BANEBLADE rescue off ebay and back fill with scions which seem to still be very good.

Your army will be only as cheap as the amount of time you are willing to put into it.

Just play IG. It's the best army. You won't be restricted and will have multiple viable builds and paths to victory.

And it isn't that expensive. Out of the gate you'll be able to beat your friends with 60-70% of their army size in points.

Trade for multiple starter kits of Primarus marines on foot?

I'm painting a CSM army right now - it's Abbaddon, 25 Terminators, 20 Cultists, and a few missile Havocs for 2000 points. At the warstore or discount boxes that could be around 200-250$usd

Grey Knights - mostly Paladin List?

The list that won GW's Heat 1 should be reasonably cheap to build.

- Guilliman
- 6x Rhino
- 6x Assault Cannon Razorback Turrets from FW
- 1x Stormraven
- Tigurius
- around 3 boxes of Tac Marines.

Spray blue. Wash. Say goodbye to your friends if you ever use it outside of hard competitive tournaments.

Alternative, Mortarion & Magnus with Poxwalker spam could be (comparatively) affordable.

- Mortarion
- Magnus
- Ebay for Dark Imperium Nurgle stuff until you have 60 Poxwalkers and perhaps a Drone or two. Possibly the sorcerer.
- Typhus
- Maybe a winged Daemon prince

Gives you a Battallion Detachment with 3x 20 Poxwalkers and 2 Superheavy Aux. with the Bros.

the GW Heat 1 build would require at least three boxes of Devastators to get the 6 necessary lascannons (or alternatively find them online) since that was his primary AT. That might be an issue since Devastators are kinda expensive.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

That is hardly competitive. You will have a very hard time claiming objectives for example.

My recommendation is to take either Space Marines or Eldar. Both can be fielded cheaper than the other armies. They always stay revelant with each edition. And both are reasonably priced.
You could not go wrong with either choice of Army. Especially so, if bought off of EBay.
