Been playing a few games with friends recently and we like 8th having jumped straight from 6th but there has been a few strange situation which have resulted in some discussions. See what y'all think:

1) Pistols in combat and characters. Say character A is engaged in combat with 4 different units and a character B, controlled by the opponent. In the shooting phase, who can he target with his pistol? Can he choose to target the character?

2) Smite in combat and characters. Similar to the above, but with smite. Can you choose who it targets if there are multiple units equidistant and in base contact?

3) Locking units in combat with 'The Dead Walk Again' - Death guard stratagem. If poxwalkers charge and kill enough units, can the newly generated models be placed in such a way that they lock more units in combat? So if say, 10 new poxwalkers are generated from kills, you could conga line them to lock other units in combat, potentially even distant units, tanks, etc, as long as they're in coherency then I don't see why not? But seems a nasty tactic.

1. You can target any unit you are engaged with in melee, but a character would still have to be the closest or equidistant.

2. If all models are equidistant you select the target for smite.

3. Unless there is a restriction that says new poxwalkers cannot be placed within 1" of enemy models then you could of course place them into combat with other units if you spawn enough of them.

See page 2 of the Warhammer 40,000 Main Rulebook FAQ for confirmation.

Thanks all. It does, however, say in the FAQ that poxwalkers have to be set up more than 1 inch from enemy models so they can't lock people in new combat when spawned.

So you can't conga line 10 newly spawned poxwalkers up a large gun line, fortunately

Edit: Actually, then would you be able to consolidate into a new unit with newly generated models? It seems so?

Yes, they can consolidate to within 1".

They FAQ'ed the Poxwalker thing to note that newly raised Poxwalkers must be placed within 2" of a model which was present at the start of the turn - so you cannot conga line much.

The answers to 1 and 2 can possibly be changing in a week and a half. From today's posting about what we're getting in Chapter Approved (the last bit is what's pertinent here):

"Additionally, Command re-rolls can no longer be used to affect Mission dice rolls. These are rolls that are used to determine who gets the first turn, whether the game continues after turn 5, and so on. Understrength units can only be taken in Auxiliary Support Detachments, while the rules on targeting characters have received a very slight change in order to prevent, for want of a better word, shenanigans involving line of sight manipulation."

So, what we're saying applying to shooting characters today may have an expiration date on how long that applies.
