Can a unit not engaged in close combat shoot an engaged enemy unit?

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.

There is no such thing as "engaged in close combat" anymore. If by that you mean "is within 1" of an enemy unit", then the answer is still No.

To flip that around, why would you think so? Is there a line that suggests this might be the case?

You have to be within 1" of the unit in order to fire pistols into a unit, so you'd already be within the range to be considered part of close combat.

Certain special rules or Stratagems allow you to (e.g. Valhallans that allows you to fire at enemy units within 1" of yours, but on a 1 the shot hits your guys) but on the whole no, it's not permitted.

Okay great I was playing a game recently and my opponent had a squad with several plasma pistols... they overheated.
