The recent background info video from Malign Portents piqued my interest and I'm thinking of dusting off some of my old WFB minis and giving AoS a whirl. In the discussion thread, and after a bit of googling, it appears that there are Free / Great cities, that you can design your own, and that they have gameplay implications.

It also at first glance looks like I have to spend CDN$80 to buy the Firestorm campaign set to get any useful information on those free cities and their relevant rules are. Is that right? Or is there some other convenient (and perhaps less expensive) source of information on this out there somewhere? And if there is, could someone point them at me?

Basically my question is: if I want more information on Free Cities, where do I start?

If you want to read hand-first, try to fish in ebay for Shadows over Hammerhal or get City of Secrets and Spear of Shadows..

That's all good info on the lore, much obliged.

I understand there are some rule implications as well - say if I wanted to a Greywater Fastness army. Where do I get access to those rules? The Firestorm Campaign set, or some other way?

... and is there a general consensus on whether that's worth it or not?

I like Firestorm provided you don't use the rules out of the box to end the campaign when the fire-scepter is created. Otherwise you might as well discard all of the territories except for the five that go into making the scepter since no one will fight anywhere else.

Other then that, its a pretty solid product IMO.
