I saw a forewarning thread a while ago but i cant seem to find it again or search is acting up. Anyways i thought id ask a similar question about word of the phoenix.

Can a soulburst which happens not in the shooting phase target characters? Same with forewarning if they deepstrike behind a screen?

I know CA faq changed it back to shooting phase only so does this clarify this? Also is there a point of reference for this?

Thanks

Soulburst is treated as the shooting phase. As such, any restrictions on targeting apply.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

There is a bit of controversy with forewarned, since some people argue you must resolve a shooting face (thus not be able to target the character) and the stratagem telling you to resolve the shooting specifically against the unit who arrived.

Not sure if there was some FAQ or aclaration about how to resolve it from GW.

Not true in the slightest.

It exactly reads as:
The unit can shoot as if it were your Shooting phase, even if it Advanced or Fell Back this turn.[u]

I think Happyjew it's quite right in that part.

People argue that "as if it were" the shooting phase doesn't make it the shooting phase thusly character protections which only apply in the shooting phase don't apply.

I don't agree with that interpretation but until we get official word from GW on it there will be disagreements.

Page 2 of the main rulebook FAQ gives an answer stating you can shoot a character in overwatch even if the character is not the closest unit to the one firing. Overwatch states that is is resolved like a normal shooting attack and uses all the normal rules except for needing the 6 to hit regardless of modifiers. GW has made it clear that you can shoot characters outside the shooting phase even if they aren't the closest unit.

That FAQ entry is no longer valid. The updated character targeting rule in CA, which already has been updated, overwrites it.

The FAQ for Chapter Approved that you mention -

ERRATA
Page 67 – Matched Play Mission Rules,
Targeting Characters
Change the first sentence to read:
β€˜An enemy Character with a Wounds characteristic
of less than 10 can only be chosen as a target in the
Shooting phase if it is both visible to the firer and it is
the closest enemy model to the firer.’

Was there a sentence after that in CA specifically stating that the restrictions apply outside of the shooting phase as well? If not, then the question in the main rulebook FAQ is still valid; it was a general FAQ weustion/answer so it' doesn't get overwritten by an Errata or an entry in CA that specifically states that the restriction applies to other phases as well.

It is nice, though, that they fixed the CA entry so that it says wounds characteristic and not just wounds. That had been a big deal when CA came out.
