Has anyone here used the Ardcoat gloss varnish from Games Workshop? How well does it work?

I've used it quite a lot for various effects and whatnot, though I don't believe I've ever just used it completely as-is, as a gloss varnish, simply because I've never wanted a miniature to be completely glossy...

what are you wanting to do with it?

...it's good to be green!

I too have only used it to create certain effects, like gems, visors or glistening innards. Never used it to fully coat a miniature for it would look really strange.

Same as the previous posters, I've only used it for lenses and lights, that sort of thing. It works really well. Makes it look more like, well, a reflective surface, instead of being matte. I personally wouldn't use a gloss varnish on my models for protection, since I prefer them to look worn and weathered instead of new and shiny.

It's also good for putting over transfers before you matte varnish your model. It effectively removes the edges around the transfer making it look painted on.

I use it for small shiny surfaces like visors and bald ratling heads

I want to use it for glossing up Eldar spirit stones. I want to paint spirit stones black with white star fields on them and then use the ardcoat to give them a shiny look.

That would be a perfect application for it. Go for it! Also post pictures when it's done because that sounds like a really cool idea.

I used it on glowy bits on necrons. Eyes, orbs, energy blades. Anything that should be glassy/shiny

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

oh yeah, 'ardcoat's exactly what you want for that ...might want to thin it with a little water before you apply it though, as it can be pretty thick out of the pot - and the last thing you want with a high-gloss effect finish, is brush strokes!...so yeah, thin it out a little, then apply a good generous layer over the stone, and leave it well alone for half an hour or so, to make sure it dries nice and smooth

I used it on my Eldar spirit stones too. It looks quite nice, especially if you highlight! I'll throw down an image when I find my guy to better illustrate.

"Ardcoat can be used number of different uses. Treat it just like regular GW paints. Always use two thin coats.

I’ve only used it on transfers and small shiny bits. Works well
