Subject: Painting genestealer cults?

Hi.
I wanted to add some genstealer cults to my tyranid army. The army in question is a leviathan army. I was planing on using the same colourscheme on the cultist, except changing the red from leviathan out with orange.
I was planing on having the cloth colours be purple, and having the metall in bronze/brass.
However I see many of the models have a lot of metal on them. All cultist armies I have seen have been using the clothing as the focus aria of the models, and the metal be less obviusl. Is it bad of me to invert this?

I used a lot of GSC for my Chaos cultists, and I wouldn't really say there's a whole lot of details that seem like they should definitely be painted in metallic colors. You have the jumpsuit underneath everything, the environment suit 'armor' panels, and sometimes a tabard, all of which you can and should paint any color you like. The details I painted metal were just the little odds and ends on the armor like the buttons and vents. If you want to paint entire armor panels in metallic colors then go for it.

No no.... take the classic orange GSC with metal on him. Change the orange out with purple, amd change the metall out with orange brass.
Cultists need to look cheap and dirty.

So to be clear, if we're talking about his guy:
You're just saying you want to paint all of the steel colored trim, cables and the like as bronze instead?

Yes.
Colour the metal a light bronze with a lot of orange in it. The coloured shapes will be purple.
I wad feeling good about it until google searches came up with the very model you came up with. I am sorry of that is your model and not just some google link, but that model is awfull. There are to many colours on it. It does not have that dirty underdog colours that the cultists pull of so well.
I am afraind that the good effect comes from a very minimalistic amount of colour. And making it all inverted (bright metal, dark clothes) will draw the eyes to the wrong places.

It's not my model, but I actually thought it was rather good. The details like the cracks in the leather rifle sling and the veins in his skin are pretty good for such an inconsequential troop model. And he is a miner, after all, which is a good reason for the industrial safety equipment style of coloring his gear has.
I don't think that making the metal bits bronze will be a bad choice, you can always darken it down and add some grime if it ends up being too distracting for you. I personally painted all of my cultists in dark purple and red with dark, gunmetal steel, but a bit of contrast isn't necessarily a bad thing.

A disgression, but the topp model is very well done on details. The colour on the leather on the gun etc.
But look at it from a macro perspective the colours all all over the place. You have the green orange contrast colour. But they are placed next to each other leaving the rest of the model very under used. Also, the teal and the green does not have a good synergy and makes the orange less good. And the yellow warning colours throwback to the 90's colour schemes (see the blood angels on the starter box from 2nd edition.) that yellow colour draws your eyes to a second place on the model. It is very messy.
The more traditional marines contrast the bright orange with the dill grey of their work uniforms. Grey isa very dull colour, and it really makes them look very under-dog ish, witch is very much how their backstory is. Put them in contrast wuth say eldar or space marines.
