What I found interesting was that mostly DARK colors were used, often with only a single highlight color.

Yeah, it's definitely the defining feature or technique in play. But perhaps not surprising. Metals are shiny and reflective, it either angles reflective light towards you or it doesn't.

(Not at all saying I could have said that without reading the article first!)

But it's fairly clear when you think about it. And seeing it explained makes for a very educational read.

I'm also impressed how painters can pick out the roght tones of brown that when combined with the right brightness, creates gold.
