Hello Dakkanauts!
As I'm sure many of you are likely experiencing, my friends and family tend to theme their Christmas gifts around my wargaming hobby/habit (interchangeable depending on who you ask) because it's a super-easy target for gift ideas. Naturally, they piled on a ton of minis enough to keep me busy for at least a year, if not more (my business partner bought me the Necromunda core and just about every kit there is available to buy for that game in a single gift). Anyway, I just got around to cracking open my Walking Dead gifts, and because I've been painting/modelling exclusively-
40K/Citadel stuff thus far, I figured I'd take a break from both and expand my horizons.
I decided to give the Army Painter line a whirl for this new project. I heard very good things, and to be honest, I have my pluses and minuses review-wise, but I suppose that's for an entirely different post. I just wanted to show everyone my finished models for your criticism and review. These are still
WIPs which is why I didn't post them in the gallery; as you can tell, I haven't based anything yet and wanted to get some feedback on some cool basing ideas for these guys/girls/zombies.
DISCLAIMER: While I mentioned that I used Army Painter, I didn't use their washes. Apparently Army Painter has some weird concept for washes -- there seems to only be one color wash which contains a range of "dark/medium/light". I also noticed with the painter's guide booklet that they have "dipping cans" to submerge your whole damn model into essentially a bucket of wash, which sounds bat-poop crazy to me and is literally going against everything I've ever known about using washes, so my wash of choice (the all-expensive Citadel) was my go-to here.
Without further a-do:
Rick & Carl Grimes:
Derek:
Group Shot of Survivors:
Nose-/Lip-less Zombie Chick:
Gut-Eater, Disembowled and Blue Dude Zombies:
Went a bit nuts with the skin tones of these dudes because it seemed a bit boring to make all the zombies pale/dead skinned, and given the size, I wanted them to be easily-distinguishable from the survivors when on the table. Accepting any and all recommendations for zombie skin tones!
Broken Leg Zombie:
This is the zombie I first painted when I decided I needed some much more extravagant skin tones. Was thinking of giving him an Imperial Fists logo on his tshirt as a bit of a personal easter egg
With regard to the Army Painter line, I really like the color range and consistency from brush to mini, but out of the bottles they seem difficult to mix to a solid consistency just by shaking (quite a bit of clear liquid will come out prior to the color no matter how vigorous you shake the bottle). I'm VERY wary about their approach to washes as I mentioned before, but admittedly, haven't given them a shot just yet. If you have any experience with their scorched-earth approach to washes, let me know how they worked out for you. I didn't feel the need to apply medium or water to the paint as they seem to come out just slightly thicker than airbrush paint, but then again, I could be doing something wrong as far as mixing them. I didn't use medium for any of these models.
Let me know what you folks think. Need some basing ideas aside from the typical grass tufts scenery (was tossing around some asphalt ideas) and I'm running out of ideas for skin tones for these zombies.
