So leading in... I'm an autistic person in my thirties who thanks to geography and a general lack of nerds in the desert(And other things we won't get into here), grew up without any Dungeons and Dragons or Warhammers or any of that stuff. Lately the painting of miniatures has come onto my radar and for reasons I can't explain it is infinitely appealing to me. The idea of building an army and making sets and stuff is too. I am also aware that this can be a very expensive hobby. So there are a couple of Games Workshops nearby and I was wondering if anyone could give some tips to get started for cheap, to make sure this hobby is right for me before I dump tons of money I don't have into it.

Going further, I was wondering if anyone had any good beginners tips of things I should know when painting or things to avoid etc. Those common beginner mistakes.

Thanks a ton guys.

I suppose I should narrow down the question a bit; what is the BARE MINIMUM of kit I am going to need to get started?

Hello and welcome!

First question would probably be... Are you going to play, or just build and paint?

If the latter, then you won't need to buy any rule books, army books, dice etc, and also won't need to stick to collecting a particular army - all you will need is sufficient tools to build, and sufficient paints to paint.

As a bare minimum, something like:
A pair of sharp and smallish-tipped side cutters for cutting model parts from sprues
A craft / hobby knife (X-Acto for example) for smaller parts, scraping off mold lines etc
Plastic glue for plastic models
Superglue for resin / metal models
A couple of decent paint brushes of different sizes - suggest starting with a size 0, a 1 and a 2.
Primer (spray can - black / white / grey depending on what you want to paint)
Enough paints to paint what you want to paint in the colours you want to paint it - intentionally vague...

The GW Paint smartphone app is actually pretty good and well worth a look through. It includes paint scheme suggestions for most armies, tips on techniques and a lot of links to the Warhammer TV videos on YouTube, which are also a fantastic resource and go all the way from getting started to producing some great looking models.

For starting out painting, the first thing to focus on is just applying paint neatly. The GW paints are a little thick straight out of the pot, so thin them down slightly with some water. It's generally considered better to apply 2 thin coats rather than 1 thick coat. If you slap the paint on too thickly you will obscure the details of the model.

If you are intending to play as well, then the first thing I'd recommend you do is visit one of your local stores and play an introductory game. The guys running the store should offer this as a service. Will at least make sure it's something you enjoy before you spend anything.

After that, pretty much same as the above but you'll be needing some rules as well, and you'll be looking at collecting and building a viable army to play with. There are rule books for building each army, what the different troops are, how many points they cost and so on.

A new version of the game came out about a year ago, and they are still writing rule books for all the armies - I think they've done about two thirds of them now. Old books aren't compatible with the new version of the game, so don't be suckered into thinking you've got a bargain with buying an old book.

Oh, and you'll also need a load of 6 sided dice.

Hi MxMagic. Welcome to the hobby.

Crispy78 gives good advice. His essential purchase list is exactly what I bought recently (having returned to this hobby from a long absence), although I didn't get superglue as most GW miniatures are plastic now, so you might not need it initially at least.

Experiment with your first batch, paint them one at a time, if you're not happy with something then try something different on the next one until you find a procedure you're happy with. Use basic, cheap grunts for this, it's better to have humble grunts you're not entirely happy with than a tank or character model you're not entirely happy with.

Paint before you assemble.

Don't try to paint very light colours over a dark base coat. Use an intermediate colour between them; e.g. if your base coat is black, then paint grey over that before white.

Make yourself a wet palette; a shallow tray (I used a foil takeaway tray with the sides cut short), a piece of wet kitchen roll and a sheet of baking paper over that. Get some paint on the brush, put in on this and it'll stay moist and usable for longer. Experiment with mixing paints on the palette, so you can get more variation from fewer paints.

Check out YouTube channels and blogs about painting, my knowledge of this stuff is very modest compared to some. I think painting videos are great as you can really see how it's done, much more informative than text and static pics.

Good luck and enjoy.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Welcome to Dakka!
I would recommend either mail-ordering one of the following, or picking one up at your nearest Games-workshop store:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/getting-started-with-age-of-sigmar-ENG
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/getting-started-with-40k-2017-ENG

On the other hand... I've a notion you might enjoy building up an historical force, and not necessarily for gaming (don't know why I think that - am I right?!). "Historical" miniatures are MUCH cheaper than fantasy/sci-fi figures, for all sorts of reasons, and a very good way of painting those kinds of forces is to use the "army painter" method. Check it out:

Good luck!

Welcome, enjoy... as a forewarning, it is insanely addictive. So, go ahead and apologize to your wallet. That said, IMHO, based on other models I build (Gundam), the prices for the detail of the GW kits, while seemingly expensive, aren't bad at all (relatively speaking). So, stick around, enjoy the hobby and the game aspect of it.

My biggest advice, don't rush yourself. I have burned out a couple of times already pushing myself to get something painted only to both burn myself out and find out that my local GW shop has already moved on to a different game.

So, relax, enjoy. Don't push yourself too hard. Most Warhammer players I know don't care if your models are painted or not when you're learning to play. So, again, take your time.

SG

Not where I should be

Hello and welcome.
I am afraid you will find no one else here who knows what they are doing either, but we muddle through together. The guys above have given some wonderful advice. Now go start a p&m blog, and we will try and help you out. Only advice I would add....always remember that this is meant to be fun.
