...but here goes.

I've lurked on this forum since before Dakka had its webstore and the Wakelin (sp?) boys were famous on here. I'm glad to see it still going strong when a lot of the great sites of the past are long dead/dying, especially forums. I still remember jumping between here and Portent and TheWarp.net, looking for rumours on the latest releases. Heck, this was one of the first forums I remember from back in the dial-up days haha. I feel so old at 35 and I probably am compared to the crowd these days

But without boring everyone, I never got around to registering for whatever reason here, so today I did. I love and continue to play 2nd edition 40k, original Necromunda, Space Hulk, Space Crusade, dabble in Infinity, X-Wing, etc. The model selection nowadays makes 40k even better than it was then, I'll never leave for good. 8th edition brought me back with that old excitement, briefly, but a fallout with a long-time mate I was going to explore it with, and seeing the prices on some of the new stuff, kinda soured me to it.

Looking forward to discussing anything and everything, and I feel like I know a lot of the regulars already, after reading years upon years of your posts.

Easily the best forum on the net, that's still alive and not overtaken by ad spamming jerks heh, thanks for having me...officially...

Welcome.

I wa on line earlier today and by accident logged into the AU GW web store. WHAT,!!! The price on that is rediculous. Then I realized I was in the AU store. Sorry for you guys. The prices are stupid, but 8th ed is the best edition in years.

Haha yeah prices are pretty extreme these days, I don't know anyone that buys direct from GW any more.

On 8th, I haven't written it off, just lost motivation. It's also difficult to judge, as a casual player, the level of appeal when most threads are loaded with competitive whining (or so it seems to me). I'm sure I'll crack it out sooner or later, the boxed release was superb.

Welcome,
IMO, it`s a good time to get into Wh40k from scratch again. Don`t be dicouraged, GW released some of the best boxes I`ve ever seen - Dark Imperium and now Forgebane, and also some of the SC! boxes are very reasonably priced.

Agree with the others, this is my favourite edition since 2nd and the quality/range of models is great. I sold my entire collection at the end of 6th (real life stuff) but found getting back into 8th really smooth and yes the start collecting boxes are actually good value now a days. With some factors a start collection box (or three) will give you a solid and fun force to start with.

Their are (as always) some balance issues at the top end of competitive play but the vast majority of armies are reasonably well balanced. As long as your not planning to play with or against 30 Dark Reapers, life is good in the grim dark.

Welcome - I only just registered too and used to play WH40K 1st edition and Space Hulk. Totally agree about the latest miniatures and WH40K 8th edition bringing back the old excitement!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Cheers all for the welcomes!

I'm glad to hear the Start Collecting boxes actually represent value now, as I remember they were basically a bunch of stuff for the same price as buying those items individually. I need a new army like I need a hole in the head (I have a decent to massive force of every faction except Tau), but I'll definitely take a look. New models are so purdy haha

Shouldn't have too many problems with 30 Dark Reapers as spam isn't a thing that appeals to my group. To be honest IMHO, all the way back to 1st edition, spamming has represented the biggest problem to balance in 40k. Certain things aren't broken if you only take one, but taken en masse they seem to break the system and skew the balance completely. And games designers don't want to tell you to only take 1 of everything, as that makes list design more limited and reduces sales. It's a predicament I see every game and company struggle with (or ignore).

I'm hearing a lot about 'this codex has broken 8th' coupled with 'this codex has made my faction weak so I'm quitting' , but that's pretty common with any edition (even my old favourite). As a casual player, I'm sure I'll manage and have fun. One notable article I read though, indicated that games were frequently over turn 2, win or lose, wipe or be wiped. Supposedly there was very little of interest in the game beyond going through the motions after turn 2, and no possibility for 'snatch victory from the jaws of defeat', which had sapped the fun for the author. It's that kinda thing that gives me pause, even as a casual player. Only one way to find out though
