Also, to answer your other point, they've always accepted debit cards. In the UK, debit cards are much more typical a method of payment than credit cards, and consequently have been in wide use for, well, at least 20-25 years.
Visa Debit was always one of two options (the other being Switch) and Switch has been phased out now, to the point that if it still exists, none of the major banks use it.
So I'd say if you've ever had a problem with Visa Debit payments on a UK site, then the problem very possibly lies with your card. I say this purely to suggest that you may need to take it up with your bank, otherwise you may find the problem raises its head again in the future, for something more important and/or time sensitive than toy soldiers.
