Got some new paints recently with which I'm extremely satisfied. Wanted to give a shout out to Badger and Vallejo for excellent product.
I'm using Stynylrez Black primer on all my miniatures right now. It goes on as an extremely thin, opaque coat through the airbrush and when painted on with a brush. I've seen no pooling on infantry, dreadnought and tank models. The level of detail on the model after priming is noticeable in comparison with other products I've used.
I've done some destructive tests with it. Stynylrez bonds well to the surface of plastic and resin models and still adheres after other coats rub off. It also strips with ease. I had to repaint a Kharybdis Assault Claw recently, and was able to remove all of the primer with a single bath in Super Clean. As it comes off, it's kind of like a web, you can actually peel it back as it loosens. This removed most of the paint from vents / cutouts on the first try.
The other paints I've been playing with are Vallejo Metal Color, which are the best metallics I've ever used. The Steel, Silver and Aluminum colors have worked very well for me painting up a Grey Knights army.
The Metal Color paints work well at a low PSI, giving me a lot of control with a dual action airbrush. This makes it easy to go from a light dusting to an opaque layer without paint splatter. What I've noticed is the Metal Color gives me a lot more control and the layers are simpler to apply.
Before this, I used paints from other manufacturers, which would go on gloopy and require a lot of pressure to work with an airbrush. I would mix with a medium and flow improver to make them more serviceable, but that would reduce the opacity on flat areas and often require building up a lot of layers.
Metal Color doesn't have this problem. It goes on thin, opaque, and very smooth. Feels like washes are a little easier to apply because of the surface.
I hope to post some pictures of the Grey Knights army as it comes along. So far, so good.
