I've been tinkering a lot with this list, but in a casual way — I don't play in tournaments, and I try to force myself to try something new in every game.
My typical opponents tend to be gun-heavy and mobile (AdMech and T'au mostly), but I also have to be able to deal with a flexible and melee-heavy Tyranid force. We typically play tweaked versions of Maelstrom or straight-from-the-book Chapter Approved missions.
Anyway, here's what I'm starting to settle into.
BATTALION DETACHMENT — NURGLE DAEMONS
Great Unclean One [WARLORD] (Plague flail, Bilesword, WT: Virulent Touch, Miasma of Pestilence, Virulent Blessing)
Epidemius
Poxbringer (Relic: Corruption, Fleshy Abundance)
Poxbringer (Fleshy Abundance)
30x Plaguebearers
3x Nurglings
3x Nurglings
3x Nurglings
3x Plague Drones
SPEARHEAD DETACHMENT — NURGLE
Chaos Sorcerer (Force sword, Combi-bolter, Prescience, Death Hex)
Plagueburst Crawler (Heavy slugger, Plaguespitter x2)
Plagueburst Crawler (Heavy slugger, Plaguespitter x2)
Plague Hulk of Nurgle
Foetid Bloat-drone (Plaguespitter x2)
Chaos Decimator (Soulburner petard x2)
In most games, I'm aggressively pushing forward with the armored elements, while using Nurglings and Plaguebearers to deny deep strikes. I typically deep strike in the Corruption Poxbringer and the GUO. I haven't missed Warp Time because my spearhead is multi-unit, and I want them to stick together. The Plague Drones and (to a lesser extent) the Foetid Bloat-drone provide field coverage to grab out-of-the-way objectives or respond to unpleasant Maelstrom surprises.
I do have two self-limitations: I will not field Mortarion at 2k for thematic reasons, and I really want to run a GUO. I know GUOs aren't exactly points-efficient, but I like the Forge World model — and I ain't running Scabes any time soon.
Some notes:
1. Everything in the list (except the Chaos Sorcerer) is a daemon, and so benefit from the various daemon auras and contribute to Epidemius' kill count.
2. The Plague Hulk is ... not my first choice. I'm using it because it's a daemon with a long-range, multi-wound gun and I don't own a Defiler. A quadlas Pred would be slightly cheaper, but it's not a daemon. Did I overlook any multiwound guns on daemons? Knocking out opposing tanks with a Pred and not putting a notch on Epidemius' bedpost was a real drag.
3. Finally, I'm not seeing an obvious place to shave 30 points. I'd like to swap out the sorcerer for one on palanquin, and I could play the Plague Hulk as a counts-as Defiler, which would open up Death Guard as my keyword for the spearhead detachment. That's relevant because I'd then have access to Cloud of Flies, which seems like it'd be incredibly demoralizing when applied liberally to the Decimator.
Thanks!
