Wanted to start a thread to see if anyone out there had a way to actually make the voidshield generator a viable option. I own one fully painted and want to actually see it getting some use when I play. I collect guard, chaos and daemons. All I can think of off the top of my head is protecting heavy weapons teams from being killed turn 1. Sticking tanks next to it is useful when they get shot with anything more than ap -2. I don't mind the idea of surrounding it with havocs but again they don't usually cop - 3 ap fire the make it useful. The skyshield landing pad is a lot cheaper and gives the same 5++ while providing elevation and flyer repairs. It basically covers the same area too. Can anyone think of any reason at all why to take a void shield? Otherwise it looks like it won't be seeing the table any time soon :(

Personally I find the nerf right at the beginning of this edition too extream. I can not think about a situation where you'll need the Void-Shield-Generator instead of any other building. It's sad because I tried really hard to paint it... :(

Fluff for the fluff-gods!

If you mean optimal for competative unlikely -it is worth almost 10% of your army so has to save a fair amount to be worth it (over say an extra tank which would output damage and so reduce the number of shots your tanks take)

It's also mission dependant if there are no objectives and you can run a static army then its much more effective. Now that the VSG is only 6" it doesnt give you a lot of room to move around it so your army needs to be stationary.

Saying that if you don't care about top tableing im running one at an ETC event in May

Diamond it to my opponent with a bastion and bunker at the back (filled with kataphron destroyers and a lascannon HWT) 3 executioner russes fanned out in front with harker my commisar and against a gun line infantry squads squeezed in the spaces. -Sure im not going to grab many objectives and thats 3/4 of my army in one blob but its gonna be tough to move.

You should run some squads of scions too to jump on objectives while your gunline knocks things out. I guess the benefit over a skyshield landing pad is that your tanks can move away from the void shield while they're stuck on a SLP for the entire game
