Do you play in the realms or do you only play in "no realm"
I have at least some of my games set in a realm and use the time of war for that realm
I only play in "no realm" and do not use time of war realm rules

As the question asks. Do you use time of war rules for the realms and play in realms, or do you just play in "no realm" and don't bother with time of war rules?

I've been using the realm specific rules since the first realmgate book put the out for Aqshy for my public campaigns.

This has always been met with half success and half anger that the time of war rules aren't "real AOS" and they don't emulate tournament environment so should not be used since they can "screw people over". (in 2016 I used a warhammer world scenario set in Aqshy where each unit had to make heat checks or suffer mortal wounds, and a fellow had a melt down and stormed out of the store after he lost stormfiends and his grey seer to this - he publicly vowed never again to play in any public campaign that wasn't using tournament rules because it was a waste of his time)

I wondered how this sentiment rolled in the overall playerbase.

I use the Realm rules, but it's important to remember that the scenario you used was a really different style of thing. It's not just "Realm" rules at that point, it's scenario rules.

I often try to, i like the character is gives a game, but i've run into some resistance too.

I think it's easiest when people know exactly what they're in for before hand, and for quick pick up games, that doesn't always work as well.

realism is a lie

I generally haven't bothered in the past since the realm didn't really change the game that much, but my group did play on Shyish during the MP campaign. With realm-specific spells coming the 2.0, we'll definitely be choosing a realm now.

Playing Aqshy at launch radically changed the game if you played a ranged/caster heavy army. Being unable to target enemies over any terrain pieces made a huuuuge difference.

It did yes. Playing in Aqshy actually made the game fun for me since you couldn't just target anything you wanted with impunity and made terrain matter by having areas of cover you could get behind and not have true line of sight dick you over because Lord Bob's stupid axe spike could be seen behind the two forests, and targeted by everything in the opposing army.

Were those rules in Realmgate Wars? If so, I never picked up those supplements. The first realm-specific rules I saw were in GHB 2017.

Much to GWs attempt no one in your fairly large gameing group even gives a crap about the relms, the only time we fight in them is if someone wants to roll to see where we fight 99% of the time it's in no relam

To many unpainted models to count.

We roll for a realm and use additional effects that are described in GHB.

Aqshy is in the main rulebook on page 146+147. "Brimstone Peninsula".
Ghyran is also in there, p182+183 for "The Greenglades".

The Quest for Ghal Maraz added some more areas to Ghyran(Rotglades) and an area of Chamon. As the books progressed, we saw more areas--but the GHB has added a snippet for all the Realms.

"Main rulebook"? I wasn't aware AoS had one. Is that the $75 hardback book? I thought that was all fluff. Didn't aware there were actually rules in it.

Yeah, that's the one I was referring to. I didn't realize it was anything other than fluff.

So coming in at very close to 50/50

Disappointing but expected. At least it wasn't a blow out in favor of never using these extra bits. Thats probably an improvement over the past five years.

When AoS first game out and we just had Realm of Fire and realm of Life (if I am remembering right) I tried to get the few players we had locally to actually try them but no one was really interested. I even suggested playing some small leagues, with each one using a different realm's rules as we got them, but that still didn't draw much enthusiasm. So when games do get played they are just straight fights with nothing special.

40k: Space Marines (Rift Wardens) - 8050pts.
T9A: Vampire Covenants 2060pts.

The times of was rules heavily favor certain armies and heavily punish others, the spells and artifacts will exacerbate this.

I'm starting to think 'Thematic' is actually the way GW says 'poorly thought out'.

It really is, GW picked the target audience, narrative, as the focus audience at AoS launch at absolute random.

Battling in realms that give bonuses and draw backs is a horrible thing to add into a game on a competitive stand point because then it will just lead to more arguments. I have my opinions about the realm settings in general but, yeah its easier to just play in no realm. Or as i like to think, back on the old world during the end times.

I've wanted to play with realm rules/times of war but when ever I suggest it the general feeling comes down to, "That's just too much to keep track of."

There was a really cool scenario in one of the Realmgate Wars books where both armies were fighting on either side of a gate and when your unit moved over the middle of the table they crossed through the gate. Each side of the gate is supposed to be set in a different realm and you can use the rules for them as long as you are on that side of the gate. Also you couldn't see/attack models on the other side of the gate.

Our narrative this year is Malign Portents so all of our battles are taking place in Shyish. We will use the Death rules.

However from what I'm reading with the new rules... you'll pick the realm your army originates in. And get to choose those items.

Which means everyone will suddenly be from the realm of light and have banishment. Particularly stormcast.

If the battle isn't fought in the realm of light though you can't use banishment, right? These are battle specific not army specific.

I am hearing (i cannot confirm this this is just what people who supposedly drink with the devs post on twitter) that you choose what realm your army originates from, and you then get the relics and spells from that realm.

In essence... I can say "my chaos army is from hyish lololol and I have banishment".

If that is true, then I expect 90% of the aos population will come from hyish. Specifically stormcast who can use it to gate enemy units into gryph hound range and then nuke them with free shooting.

Again though I cannot confirm, only what i have read on the twitterverse.

My understanding was that the realm of battle is determined for the specific fight. Relics and spells are determined before the battle begins but after lists are constructed. At least in 40k. I would assume this would happen here.
