When basing large models like Knights, is it better to glue the model to the base first and base around it? Or is building the base then gluing the model to the basing material better? I'm guessing option 2 is easier, but option 1 is more secure. Which choice is better?

How are you basing the knight?

PVA the base, add sand and rocks, paint/drybrush.

I'd glue the Knight on first then, the only reason I'd ever say to glue the Knight on after is if you're doing some fancy cinematic terrain.

I'd also glue the legs to the base first, if you're going to use sand and pva, in order to avoid it ,,hovering" over the terrain. I'd only glue it afterwards, if you'd be using an even terrain (i.e. floor tiles) for the base. But that's only my personal preference.

Really depends what you're doing with the base.

You could do the base first if you pin the knight to the base,
What base are you using?

What I've done for my Knights is blu tac them to the base initially.
Then I've sprayed them leadbelcher.
Handily where the feet were can still be seen as it's not been sprayed so you have 8 small black patches where the feet will be.
This has allowed me to wash and drybrush my Knight chassis without having to worry about getting it on the base.
Then I remove the Knight and blu tac then apply pva everwhere except where the black patches are and add my sand, rocks etc.
Then spray the base black and paint and then glue the knight on after.

It really depends on the base style. If the material you're representing is a hard surface that would support a knight (a solid concrete road, for example) then do the base first. If it's a softer surface (dirt, debris) that would be crushed underneath a heavy vehicle then you probably want to press the feet in place to leave an indentation in your basing material, remove the knight so that the paint/sand/etc don't spread onto the feet, and then glue it in place once the base is finished. If it's a very soft surface (mud, snow) that would be crushed down and flow around to cover the feet then attach the model and apply the basing material, ensuring that you spread it around and over the feet a bit.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

Pin the knight to the base. Normally I only do Bases seperate if I am going crazy with the display like a diorama or something. You often can't get a a solid glue over sand and have to pin. I would glue feet to base(both plastic) then base around the model.

Cheers folks. It's the standard plastic oval Knight base. I'm following the base instructions from "How to paint Citadel, Knights" guide. So sand surface with smallish rock chunks.
