hello all, new to the hobby. got my fiirst models. Ive got the dark imperium box, the box of three easy push fit intercessors, a box of long fangs and a geigor fell hand model. I basically want to start of by making two packs of grey hunter conversions out of these.

I figure I also need a box or two of the regular space wolves troops for wolf bits too right? i also saw some cool cloaks with a bit of fur somewhere from some sort of chaos box, anyone know which one theyre from?

Am i right in thinking i can have one of the hell blasters in each of the packs as a plasma gun holding grey hunter? and the primaris ancient standard bearer can be converted to my grey hunter with standard in one of my packs too right? Beyond that they all get to hold a chain sword and a bolt gun right?

Porbably silly questions to you guys but im new and theres much to learn. But I have got some of that precious green stuff everyone loves so much so i feel i may be on the right track.

Welcome to the hobby!

Now, I'm not sure if you know, but the Primaris Marines (the big ones in the Dark Imperium box and stuff) have different rules from the "normal" Grey Hunters and stuff.

Of course, if that doesn't bother you, for modelling reasons, or because you're doing count-as, go right ahead!

I'd certainly advise picking up just one box of Grey Hunters, and probably the Space Wolves upgrade sprue too. The Chaos Warriors box has fur cloaks, but I don't know how well they fit with Space Marines. An option I do know that works is some cloaks from anvil industries - their Exo Lord Fur Cloaks would be fine! Or, if you feel up to it, greenstuff is an option!

Lone Hellblasters can't be attached to a squad of Intercessors. Primaris are very much all about the mono-squad loadouts, which means no special weapons in the regular squads (except grenade launchers). However, there's two ways around this (aside from houseruling with your opponent). One, is to play with the Deathwatch rules, which do let you add models to units. The other is to just play with the regular Space Marines rules, but using Primaris models. You wouldn't get the +1 Wound of the Primaris, but you get some great looking models!

The chainsword/bolter thing is also not available to Primaris - unless you play them as count as regular Marines.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the quick reply. Thats great, i will grab a box of the chaos warriors, box of grey hunters and the upgrade box then and see if they can be made to fit. I literally have never played a game and wouldnt know how, these are literally my first ever models. I bought the imperium 1 book of rules to help me and just read through the grey hunters bit there. I saw in the imperium 1 book it said that one of the grey hunters can use a plasma gun, I was going to use the hell blaster with a bit of modification as the grey hunter with the plasma gun. Then I wanted to use a wolfified primaris ancient as the grey hunter with the standard.

I was hoping i could make the models with the intercessors as a base model then just modify them with the chainsword or preferably chain axes and some furry cloaks etc and just pretend theyre normal grey hunters. The regular sized models like the long fangs and even the geigor model just look small and weak compared to the primaris models. Its purely for the look i guess yeah.

When i have enough troops to play a game, would people still play against me if I am using converted primaris marine models as normal grey hunters?

Instead of buying a whole box, have you considered looking online for bits sites, if you're only after a few parts? Could save you money.

If you're going to use the Grey Hunter rules, then putting a Hellblaster in a unit of Intercessors would be fine!

Nah, using Primaris as "normal" marines is absolutely fine. I know some people might get antsy about the height of the models, but honestly, I'd be fine with it, if you explained that you were using Primaris models as Grey Hunters.

Ok thanks for that. Yeah those bits sites are like candy shops lol. I kinda like seeing whats in the sets, i think if i had a load of spare parts id maybe just buy the bits i need, because i dont have anything though, im thinking the stuff might come in handy thats left over.

The other thing i wanted to ask, those Centurion Devestator models, are they too big to use as space wolves terminators?

Hello from the Fang! Glad you have picked Space Wolves to start out with, by far the best Marine army there is! (I am honestly not biased). One of the best places you can start looking for advice is in the Space Wolves Tactics thread, there are 33 pages of discussion ther for you about the Space Wolves in this edition. Tactics, Unit Composistion, good loadouts everything an aspiring Blood Claw could want.

A couple of bits to start with aside from that though. We are due to get a codex soon (rumours are the end of August), which will probably bring the Primaris line up to date with the way the Space Wolves fight. Before you rush off and buy a lot more stuff, maybe wait until the Codex drops so that you can get an idea of what you want and how you are going to equip everything. I am waiting for the codex before I carry on with my Wolves to be honest with you, and to see what they do with the Primaris marines. Running Primaris as Grey Hunters shouldnt be a massive issue with anyone, though it depends on your local gaming group. I personally dont mind it, and think it looks cool if done well. Adding a Hellblaster in as a counts as Plasma Gun works in this situation, and if you add him as the 6th Squad member then you can still get them into a Razorback with no problems. Alternatively you can still run them as Primaris Marines, though without any strategems or codex buffs you will struggle with them in most games.

One of the big plus points for the Space Wolves is the fact that our units are so customisable. You can take a unit of Grey Hunters, get a Plasma Gun, Plasma Pistol and give the pack leader a Power Fist before you even start looking at giving everyone in the unit a free chainsword. This means your standard Grey Hunter runs with a Bolter, Bolt Pistol and Chainsword so he can be a threat at range or up close in CQC. Wolf Guard work well as bikers or with Jump Packs, and are so customisable its insane. Gear them for maximum dakka or to tank hunt, the choice is there. Wulfen are an absolute beast of a unit (pardon the pun) and will also buff other nearby units, and are probably the biggest lifters in the index for the wolves. Bjorn the Fell Handed has been known to eat Knights for breakfast too, which is always handy!

Modelling wise, the Space Wolves heads all fit onto the Primaris bodies, which is an easy way to add some character to your units. You also have access to the other wolf bits like the tail talismans and back pack totems to help identify your guys more as Space Wolves and not just Vanilla marines. The Space Wolves Pack lets you build a great selection of models, and will aslo give you bits to make even more models look great.

Have a look at an app called Battlescribe, which will help you plan out your possible armies and loadouts for the future.

Finally, have fun!
