Hello guys.
I have enjoyed reading DAKKA for a while now but decided to join the community recently.
I have recently got back into 40k after >10 years absence. I was an avid fantasy player but I cant bare to play age of sigmar as it has ruined fantasy in my humble opinion. So it has been the perfect time to get back into 40k.
The rules are a world apart from when i last played and however and I am unsure regarding command points/stratagems.

I had a load of old space marines from the past so I have been making a full army of them before I start another. I also have a small amount of Imperial Guard.

So regarding the forces I have it is my understanding that units from both a space marine army and an imperial guard army could be used to make up a single battalion to give the 5+ command points (using the keyword 'imperium')?
If I am correct in my thinking this would you then gain access to both space marine stratagems on space marine units as well as imperial guard(A M) stratagems on A M units?
Or would you need to have a whole space marine battalion for their stratagems and a subsequent imperial guard patrol to gain their stratagems?

Any info re the above would be much appreciated, cheers in advance lads.

Hi there. Welcome to Dakka.
To answer the questions, you'll need the rulebook and codexes for the forces you want to use, and they'll explain about how the keyword thing works. Chapter Approved 2017 made some slight changes, and explains 'soup' lists like you want better.
From memory, mixing codexes makes stratagems harder to use. You'll want to keep battalions separate to use them.

Search through the "40k Discussions" sections for "Chapter Approved" threads to find out more. Not as many people frequent the Intros section, and you'll get more help there.
Hit the yellow triangle button to get this thread moved, or open another, just with that question in it.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Thanks guys, ye I have the books but I was just confused regarding the "soup" lists as I had heard conflicting arguments. I personally prefer to not to mix armies but going by the few games i have had in 8th edition lots of people seem to be going for "soup". I fear i may have to do likewise to stay competitive, so I will probably be making some themed SM and IG lists. Thanks for pointing me towards chapter approved that clears things up. Now I can make sure there are no cheeky command points from 'imperium' battalions. Thanks again.
