So, I'm just getting back into 40k since not having touched it since 3rd edition. Looking at all the new stuff I got hooked on the Knights, and bought myself a box of Helverins and a Imperial Warden. My local game shop is holding a tournament next month and I figure what better way to get back into playing? So far this is what I'm thinking of bringing.

Superheavy Detachment - Knight Lance (+6 CP) Questor Mechanicus - House Taranis

Knight Gallant (412)
w/ Reaper Chainsword, Thunderstrike Gauntlet, Meltagun, Stormspear Rocketpod

Knight Errant (453)
w/ Reaper Chainsword, Thermal Cannon, Meltagun, Stormspear Rocketpod

Knight Crusader (501)
w/ Rapid Fire Battle Cannon, Avenger Gatling Cannon, 2x Heavy Stubbers, Heavy Flamer, Ironstorm Missle Pod

Armiger Warglaive (177)
w/ Thermal Spear, Reaper Chain Glaive, Meltagun

Armiger Helverin (174)
w/ 2x Armiger Autocannons, Heavy Stubber

Total= 1717

I figured that was a good mix of anti-tank and anti-troop. Was also planning on using the Exalted Court and Heirlooms of the House to give all 3 of the Knights Warlord Traits and a relic. Then have the Errant, Gallant, and Warglaive running together to get close while the Crusader and Helverin hang together to shoot things close behind them. But as I mentioned I'm am pretty new to 8th so I could be way off base.

I've currently got 2 Armiger Helverin's and a Warden who's only partially constructed so he can still be most anything. I was going to buy the rest this weekend, so I'm pretty open to changes so long as it's still a full knight list. I know I've still got 33 points but damned if I can think of anything to spend it on.

gallent and crusader are great but why the errant? Not taking a Castellan is a mist chance. Maybe drop a Helvrin to upgrade the Errant to a Castellan? Also, there is no point taking carapace upgrades on the gallent, you are going to advance it anyway. So unless you plan on using house Raven it is not going to shoot.

Hmmm. The carapace upgrades were mainly a way of spending the 160 or so points I had left. But I hadn't thought about the fact that I'd probably never use it on the Gallent. And I'd ignored the Castellan as too expensive points-wise, but I'll have to take a second look.

At optimal build a Castellan is only 103 points higher than the crusader, while that may sound like alot to a knight player that really is nothing, the extra firepower is well well worth it though, their is not much in this game that can boast the ability to turn a landraider into scrap metal in a single shooting phase, a Castellan can and it does it from over 60 inches away.

Knights have 2 glaring weaknesses that really hurt them in 8th edition particularly in the competitive environment and thats while they can take ground like champs they cannot hold the ground they take, you do NOT want a 400+ point model sitting on objective 4 because the mission says to hold it, especially when it just a handful of gribblies can get within 3 inches of it and just take it from him whether they can fight him or not, the 2cnd often bleed into the first and thats elevated terrain, Knights cannot interact with any level other than ground except to shoot, they cannot charge a unit on a different level nor can they take an obj sitting on such, given the standard 40k table its near enough to 100% that you will have to deal with mutli-level ruins and buildings in every game.

If your looking at expanding to 2k or even just being competitive at 1750 your gonna want to look at getting some boots on the ground, Ad-mech is a fluffy choice, Imp-guard is the most effective, Space marines or Sisters fall somewhere in between, though beware of taking too many points away from the knights.
