Not sure on the toes, quick google of the model makes it look like they're pretty blocky but with fiddly bits hanging off, so he may have drilled the toes to the body as normal, then just let the fiddly bits fiddle. Curved surfaces you'd dry-assemble to eyeball/mark a good spot for the pin, drill the pin in one side, then use wet paint or a bit of poster-tac or the the like, dry fit again, and use the resulting mark (either a raised section of poster tac, or where the paint isn't) to drill your hole. Also, slightly overbore holes (enough where the pin can just wiggle a bit) and the flexibility of metal wire can help compensate for errors.
