Hello everybody, i need some advices on tau. I know almost nothing about them, and i'd like to know what is good, what's playable and what is totally unplayable.

I also have a list of things i am willing to buy, tell me if they're worth the investment please:

Xv95 Ghotskell battlesuit
Kv128 Stormsurge
Xv88 Broadside x2
Ty7 Devilfish
Hammerhead

Thanks in advance.

I agree with above. Look at the Tau Tactics thread for more info on Tau.

Look up/Google some back ground first. If like that buy the codex and have a gander. Then if want, get what you like (can get some average stuff if really like it, rules change all the time, so don't worry to much on that).

I personally got Tau for Broadsides (I love the look of the model and converted the Heavy rail rifle with missile ends cause I like missile sides). So I designed an army around units of them (an army with missileside support but able to get objectives etc).

Planning stage: What I am saying is if want, read other peoples opinions. However, read the background, then develop your background/army around what you want/like the look of (easier to keep going then if have to paint 1, 5, 30, 100 of the things you don't like the look of). Next, read some peoples opinions on what is good. Then, adapt your army to the meta you want (if you want, if you like something everyone hates...f**k them). After that, look at buying. Check GW for standard price. Then look on ebay and ebay stores or local stores to see if discount. If no discount buy GW direct to door (or in store if want).

Finally, another tip, buy what you like the look of over rules (to an extent). Rules change all the time, unless you want to play in tournaments all the time.

I'd move Longstrike up to the Good Category personally and I'd put Hammerheads (with Longstrike) in lower Good as well and merely Playable without him. Rest is spot on. Also Shield Drones should be present in Good as well.

Longstrike is good if not playing competitive, him having bs 2 and plus 1 removes the heavy weapon penalty allows you to hide him turn 1, but the moment long strike is visible to the enemy your hammerheads die. Just like predators, the no invul saves is very apparent. He is good just not premium. The fact that he doesnt have savior protocols(a great mechanic to tau) also hurts, making broadsides and riptides so much more durable

Yeah the good category needs to be split up into "good" and "competitive". There's a lot of things that are normally very good against mono-dex lists at your FLGS or in smaller RTTs but won't cut the mustard if you take them to a GT or a Major event.
