In the tradition of Do_I_Not_Like_That threads comes this one about the Great War.


The question is relatively simple. Did Great Britain have to fight in World War I?

The entente between France and great Britain had been relatively a recent affair. IIRC Great Britain's interests in the war were relatively "light" compared to the battle of survival between Germany, France, Russia, and Austro-Hungary. Perhaps less than 50 years earlier, Great Britain had been closely allied with Austria in thwarting Russian ambitions in the Dardanelles. Colonial friction with France was a big issue. Therefore, her alignment with France and Russia was not a pre-destined decision. Great Britain could also have decided not to uphold Belgian Neutrality and the Treaty backing it with few consequences.
