Since the City Fight rules have been out for a bit and there isn't a thread about them already, what are people's thoughts /experience after a game or two?

1) Obscured makes so much sense it should just be a core rule. It makes infantry significantly more survivable. 40k has felt way too lethal this edition, just using this set of terrain rules helps enormously.

2) The "six always hits" modifier also makes a lot of sense. GW shouldn't have allowed armies stack up -3 to-hit penalties in the first place, but now that it's here this adjustment helps reign it in at least a little.

3) It's a good thing Plasma dropped in price because you won't get clean shots to overload it very often.

4) From a Marine perspective Assault Marines and Vanguard Veterans feel a lot more valuable since getting into melee removes all those pesky to-hit amd armor save modifiers.

5) Also from a Marine perspective, Imperial Fist suddenly feels like it's competing on an even footing with Raven Guard and Ultramarines.

6) Guardsmen being able to get to a 2+ save is stupid, but you're going to have a hard time finding enough cover for 200 guardsmen. Marines don't have that problem.

7) As much as Obscured is a great rule, it does highlight how stupid the current "rerolls happen before modifiers" rule is. They should really make rerolls happen after modifiers, but also make anything with a specific target number happen on the unmodified dice (exploding plasma guns, sniper rifles inflicting a Mortal on a 6 to-wound, etc).

It's looking like my local club is going to just start using the City Fight terrain rules all the time, and I have no complaints about that.

I think they are great and should be used in all matches as core mechanics.
The rules are 1.) much more realistic and use common sense 2.) they even encourage good manoevering and movement 3.) they are good for smaller and more elite units, while not helping the already strong hordes. I think you could even find more reasons why they are good.

On a side note I also think that the "No matter the casualties" rule from the new battleplans should be used all the time.

I love them. But not being matched, I don't see them getting traction unless ITC adopts them.

I wouldn't be surprised if that happens.

I made a simmilar thread here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/768417.page also touching on the new adjustments to the terrain dataslates.

All in all I think these changes are great, as terrain has been pretty much a non-factor for all of 8th ed. Playing with these rules should add some nice tactical variability to matches, so you wont just have to compare army lists and predict the outcome.

In addition to the core COD rules, I think the warlord traits, stratagems, missions, and battlezones are also all pretty great. The stratagems help to balance out some of the extremes with things like siege shells, grappling hooks, and breaching gear. There's enough good stuff there that I wouldnt mind bringing a warlord with +3 CP for COD strats.
I think I'm in love with the Conflagration battlezone, as it brings a very nice risk/reward to being in cover. If a unit is deeply entrenched, there are stratagems to light their cover on fire and literally burn them out.
