Hi guys

I recently bumped into some Dreadfleet box sets when browsing through eBay. And memories from the old days came back when I used to play Man'o'War!
Anyone with some experience in this specialist game? Is it fun to play and paint?
I do know that GW has kind of gave up on this game, same as Battlefleet Gothic - which I personally do not agree with as these were nice, little games, which did not require massive amounts of figures, boards etc

So would you say, yeah go for it and enjoy the game?

I find these guys are gamer's gamers.
They (and others who have reviewed the actual game) note DF is a very random game.
If you enjoy random and go in with that expectation, I suspect it's like many games---who you play with is more important than what you play.

Thanks for the link. SO it seems a lot of fun.....but nothing more really. No competitive game play except few decision during the game. No real strategy. It might be limited to two players only, but not sure about that. Anyway, I really love the idea of naval battles in the fantasy Warhammer, shame GW did not carry on with this idea. Same with Gothic. Had a look at some of the game play there and that looks more strategic etc, but again GW just washed ot down the drain. Pity.

I played most of the factions in Dropfleet, and really enjoyed it. The local scene in my area died, otherwise I might still be playing it. It was my first experience painting models, but I did enjoy it. Painting a ship is very different than individual units. The kits themselves are well thought out. A cruiser box for example, will let you build any 2 light, regular, or heavy cruisers for that faction. In many cases, you can go ham with magnets, and cut down the number of ships you need to actually buy.

I can’t really speak for playing (I’ve heard some good things though), but the miniatures are fantastic, and painting and building the set is a really fun project. Production values on this are through the roof. Go for it! (Especially at the prices it’s going for these days, which should be a lot less than original retail)

So, yeah, I have a fully painted, mostly unplayed set, sitting in my basement.

from a hobby perspective, yea grab it if you can find one at a decent price.
from a gaming perspective, find something else.

as it is, it is basicly that boardgame you pick up once a year, play a day and then shelf it until next year. rins repeate.
to make it a viable replayable game, it would need the same kind of support that other specialist games had, something that gw prolly never ment DF to have, and kinda brings the question, why was DF even created?

The models are terrific but the game itself is less than stellar. You are capable to cripple the enemy´s ships just by playing random event cards.

Thanks for all your reviews guys. Reading the cons and pros, and watching the game play I am aware that this won't be a frequent and regular choice to play but looks a lot of fun and is something I can play with friends or my kids on random occasions.

Anyway, I picked up a brand new set for 65 pounds incl postage so I guess it is a fair price. Waiting for it to arrive and cannot wait to paint all the brilliant models.

You could’ve had my never played with set for £50 if you don’t mind a bent box
