Just started playing 8th edition and started reorganizing my old 2nd edition Iron Warriors army to make it compatible with the models I have/new organization, and here's what I've come up with so far. The original Idea way back when was an independant platoon/company/garrison whittled down through the ages. My main dilemna is where to split up my special weapons. Organization wise, probably a battallion and a vanguard/spearhead detachment.

HQ- Terminator Lord: Melta-bolter, chainfist.
HQ- Exhalted champion: (modeled as an apocethary) bolt pistol, chainsword for narthecium?
HQ- Exhalted champion: powersword, poweraxe (ridiculous I know).
HQ- Warpsmith
HQ- Sorcerer: Force axe, bolt pistol

T- Chaos Marine Squad- 10 man: power sword, melta, plasma.
T- Chaos Marine Squad- 10 man: chainaxe, 2 plasmas.
T- Chaos Marine Squad- 10 man: powerfist, plasma pistol, 2 meltas.

Elite- Chosen - 6 man squad: powerfist, 2 plasma pistols, chainaxe, poweraxe, 2 flamers, icon of vengeance.
Elite- Chaos terminators-5 man squad: reaper autocannon, bolter-flamer, 2 powermauls, chainaxe, lightning claw, powerfist.
Elite- Dreadnought(hellbrute): Twin lascannon, thunderhammer(hellbrute hammer).

Heavy- Havocs- 5 man squad: chainsword, 2 lascannons, 2 missile launchers.
Heavy- Havocs- 5 man squad: powerfist, autocannon, 2 heavy bolters, missile launcher.
Heavy- Vindicator: combi-bolter
Heavy- Predator: twin lascannon, 2 heavy bolters.

Transport- Rhino: bolter-flamer

Roughly 2000 pts total.
Maybe the chosen should get a melta, plasma and the first squad gets 2 flamers instead? Also have an old rapier laser destroyer as well if someone uses something big like a knight (but at the moment it has servitor crew).

Opinions?

Welcome to the updated 40k, I'm sure you are going to enjoy 8th edition.

You're not the only person to try to adapt a 2nd edition list to the current meta. If you have all the models already and want to experiment, go for it! You'll learn a lot more that way than by asking questions on Dakka.

If you're looking to optimize your list, one thing you will discover is that Legion Traits, Command Points, Stratagems and Relics are important to the success of a Chaos army.

- Iron Warriors are not bad, but they don't benefit from their Legion Trait as much as other factions do. You can build very powerful Daemon Princes and ignore cover in some specific situations. You might want to familiarize yourself with other Legions and consider playing as them, since there are no WYSIWYG rules anymore.

- Command Points are necessary to access Stratagems. It sounds like you are up to speed on how CPs relate to detachments, which can be hard to understand for players from previous editions. Sounds like you would get 9 - 3 for playing, 5 for a Battalion, and 1 for the Spearhead. That's respectable.

- In terms of Stratagems, might make sense to ask yourself how to use them to optimize the performance of units in this army. Veterans of the Long War is one you want to be thinking about.

- In terms of Relics, I think you want the special armor Iron Warriors get access to, and you want it on your Terminator Lord.

That would get you started towards list optimization. From there, you would need to pick some better units. While opinions may differ, CSM are okay but there are some more points efficient options available (like Cultists.) Predators and Vindicators are okay, but they lack the close combat crush of Maulerfiends or the long-range dominance of Contemptors. Have it in the back of your mind that you eventually need some upgrades.

You might want to get familiar with the specialist detachments in Vigilus Ablaze. I've found them useful for planning detachments with some special rules baked in.

The Iron Warriors Warlord trait of "cold and bitter", looks like it would come in handy (No morale checks). As does the "Iron Within" strategem.

problem is, you need big enough squads to really profit from it, (Cultists).

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Go for a double Battalion. There are very few benefits to running squads of 10 CSM, you will want to run them in squads of 5 instead. Don't get too attached to the Iron Warriors rules, the paint does not determine the rules, the army list does. The Purge Renegade Warband or Alpha Legion are your two best options. If you decide to go with Alpha Legion make sure to note down that all your guys are Slaanesh, the Stratagem for Slaanesh could come in handy for your Havocs especially.

Thanks for the input. 5 man squads makes sense, I do have cultists but was trying not to use them, and other chaos legion marines(at least a squad of each). I do have some Tzeench demons, but I'll eventually do an army list for thousand sons.
What I need is some fast attack I think to get those extra CPs?

A Brigade would only yield a couple more CP and it is very limiting because with that many units you won't have many pts for each unit, I'm not even sure if you can fit it all in as is, so you shouldn't invest in 3 FA choices IMO. Don't invest in Cultists ATM, they are fairly weak after having been nerfed twice. Play some games with what you have and get properly back into the game. Chapter Approved 2019 could change a bazillion things, maybe Cultists go back down to 4 pts again or maybe Defilers become amazing. We are half-way through the current season, now is the time to paint up what you have, get to know the rules, save up and spend after the next Chapter Approved. Iron Warriors relied heavily on Cultists because their unique Warlord Trait synergized very well with Cultists, but ATM Cultists are just too crappy compared to Infantry Squads, Orks and Genestealer Cults.
