Hello and good afternoon all,

Currently thinking of starting a Ork army, and wanted to ask how Orks are doing so far since the new book was released. And if the army is competitive ?

I play in a pretty competitive group overall so looking at bringing some possible Green pain to the table.

Cheers

In a word, yes.

HOWEVER, there is a pretty big caveat to this. For an Orky army, you have to go all or nothing for a lot of our lists, since we rely on target saturation to do well in most competitive settings.

That means no mixing footslogging 30 man boyz squads with battlewagons in the same list. Especially in the competitive environments, you have to leverage some of our stronger stratagems to get the edge over soup and other armies.

Currently some of the most competitive Ork units are:

Dakkajets
Mek Gunz (specifically Smashas, though that might change soon with CA 2019)
30 man squads of boyz (usually tellyported via stratagem or held in the back awaiting Da Jump from a Weirdboy)
Weirdboy because of the above
Gretchin (mainly for getting CP from battalions, and providing grot shields for Lootas)
Lootas (specifically Bad Moons Kultur, so you can shoot twice)
Big Mek with Relic SAG
Warboss on Warbike with Killa Klaw relic

Orks are in the best shape they've been for a while and certainly competitive. However this comes with the understanding that there are big holes in the list and certain things that you'll have to ignore altogether, or completely rely on.

The current hotness is to field massive numbers of Boyz, stack them full of buffs and crush the enemy under Sluggas. What is different this time is that Orks now have 2 different routes to Deep Strike, plus a tactic that improves charge distances.
So a pretty typical list will be based around mobbing up as many Sluggas as you can find, throwing them across the table with Weirdboyz and Tellyports, and then feeding them CP until everything is dead.
Plus a big battery of Mek Guns and a Shokk Attack Mek to cover them, and some Dakkajets to open charge lanes.

It's not a great time if you're more interested in the Speed Freeks or mixed-style, unfortunately. A lot of units were culled by the Index which Orks relied very heavily on.
