I don't know if it's a 'done thing' these days, but how do people feel about including allied units as part of an army?

Are players generally ok with this?

As a BA (successor) player, I don't really have wide scope for this - although I could probably reasonably go for an Armageddon Steel Legion unit/s (given the massive sacrifice and aid given in defence of the planet by the Blood Angels).

Theorethically you can ally all off IoM stuff

Generally Soup falls in two categories : The one where you just seek to play fluffy, e.g. an army from a specific campaign etc, and the one where you trhow in loyal 32's and get 5 CP for cheap to fuel smashcaptains, Knights etc. which is definately less liked in non tournament environments.

However if you say BA successor do you use the new marine dex or the BA dex?

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Using BA Codex.

It's not something I feel a desperate need to have in my army, but it is something I wanted to keep as a possibility for the future - just to have a wider variety of models more than anything else. I would hope a squad of Steel Legion and perhaps one of their vehicles (nothing crazy like a Baneblade!) wouldn't cause anyone any problems?

TBH, if you pick up a baneblade most opponents wouldn't care because it is worse then many knights and costs more points wise.
You just need to make them into a propper detachment, e.g. in your exemple you could always pick a Battalion with 2 x commanders 30 Steellegionaires and 3 chimeras and nobody would really complain.
Ofcourse f you go and just pick Cadians with mortars 30 and 2 commanders then you might get some looks because you'd probably be abusing the CP system via allies.

but yes you have the whole of the IoM fraction to ally with.

Out of curiosity, do you run your BA Successor *as a successor* or do you just run them as pure BA? Because I hate to say this, if you're doing the former you're hamstringing yourself in limiting your access to relics.

Do you know what your sin is, Malcolm Reynolds?
Ah hell, I'm a fan of all seven.
But right now, I'm gonna have to go with wrath.

As a successor. Yes I realise I'm missing out on stuff, but I quite like staying true to the fluff I've created.

I can respect that decision - though it's a tough road to tread. You might look to pick a relic for an allied force then - but I think in most cases you'd need your Warlord to be from that allied faction, unless you use one of the ubiquitous 'get more relics* stratagems.

Thanks for the advice, it is appreciated. I was looking to make my own relic/statue for my chapter (a mound of enemy skulls with a power sword driven through a daemon skull and the helmet of a fallen hero on the hilt of the sword) - posted about it in Proposed Rules section. Got some decent advice about the kind of rules that might be acceptable for that (along the line of Imperial Statuary).
