Hey all! Excited to be here. I have been lurking around the 40k universe for a few years now and am looking to get more involved with it. I purchased the dark vengeance set in 2013 with the intention of playing but other priorities took over. A few years after that I started reading the Horus heresy series and am loving it. As a previous model builder, the painting is what first drew me to 40k. I love the colours and the sci-fi theme. I finally have some time to really get into it and have been exploring the rules. My dark vengeance set is quite old so I believe I’ll need to get the 8ed rule book. I am mainly interested in dark angels and want to expand the army included with dark vengeance. If I purchase the dark angels codex do I also need the space marine codex? While I’m here I’m also looking for anyone who might be willing to teach a newbie. I’m in Calgary Alberta.

Okay, I think Dark Angels just got an update in White Dwarf magazine- if not, they'll get an update soon, I think.

So, I'd suggest getting some of the Getting Started boxes- they're pretty cheap and have the basic rules to get you started. Get a few of those smaller boxes Space Marines vs. Nurgle dudes to learn the game. Good bargains, and good enough to build Dark Angels.

As far as teaching? Go to your FLGS (the local game shop) and tell someone you wanna learn, and show them what you've got. You should have no difficulty getting help.

You will need the rulebook, too. But for now, the basic rule foldout shout help you until you can get it.

Your Dark Angels from that Dark Vengeance box are still totally valid, but I think they need a bigger base size.

Mob Rule is not a rule.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. One question, might be stupid, what do you mean by base size for the dark angels? Are you literally talking about the model base or something else?

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Hello,

Don;t worry about base size as long as you put them on what they came with.

All that means if you buy a box of devastators now as apposed to back then the marines have been "scaled up" ever so slightly so the bases are a little bigger. But no expects any hobbyist to un base and re base their models when they're on the bases they came with.

I too am a DA player. If you want to get into 8th ed for DA our shtick so far has been Plasma, more so than ever. There is a thing called "the castle", I will explain it, it is up to you whether you wish to deploy this tactic.

HQ Azrael, Lieutenant.
Elite - Primaris/Chapter Ancient, 3/6 Agressors
Heavy - 10 Hellblasters.
Fast - Dark shroud.

This comes just shy or just over a 1000 pts depending on loadout. Azrael gives everything a 4++ (invulnerable save) apart from the darkshroud, but thats raven wing so you simply advance it 0.01 of an inch and it gets jink and a 4++ anyway. It can;t shot but it only has a hevay bolter or an assault cannon.

Azrael also allows the entire bubble to re-roll all failed hits. The lieutenant also allows the whole bubble to re-roll failed wound rolls of a 1. The ancient on a 4+ when models die allow them to shoot as normal (yes, its as broken as it sounds).

The hellblasters (recommended to arm with normal plasma incinerators but any variant can be used) offer 10-20 plasma volley shots at -4 to opponent Armour save. couple it with overcharging and a 1CP stratagem 3 damage per wound. (thats right the potential for 60 wounds from 10 guys per volley, although on average you'll only get about 30-40 through).

The aggressors if you even only have 3 of them, allow roughly 50-60 bolter shots. again with the re-rolls and have 3 wounds each and 4-5 attacks with power fists.

On top of all this, 4++, re roll hits, re roll wound rolls of 1, because of the darkshroud everything is -1 to hit for your enemy.

It's a good basis for nay DA player to begin here. The only issue you will come accross is the anti primaris people. There is a current hate campaign against primaris dudes (which is likely to change going forward as it's now confirmed we have primaris dudes in ravenwing and deathwing and as veterans, we are just waiting for update drop to see what this actually means).

Space Marines used to come on 28mm bases, the same ones that the Guard, Tau, and other puny mortals still come with. Marines and a few other miniatures now come on 32mm bases standard. This is for standard tactical marines, terminators and bikes and dreads and all that are unaffected. 32mm looks a bit nicer since their feet are no longer pushed right up to, or over, the edge. Some tournaments might frown on the smaller bases. You can get 32mm on the GW store, eBay, or get your FLGS to order some for you. Or just put them on 28mm if you don't mind the size.
