Recently, after spending way too much time and energy on trying to put together too many armies, I've decided that I might just head back to my roots. When I started Warhammer, I was a 40K-only person. But, one day, I decided I might give AoS a shot. The very first models I bought were a Necromancer and a box of Grave Guard. I no longer have the Grave Guard (gave them to a friend when I moved on to other AoS projects). But, I now have a want to go back to my roots when it comes to AoS. Go back to playing Death.

I've been out of really keeping up with the AoS game (mostly a hobbyist). But, with free summoning being a thing now, It seems that having a large number of summonable units is the best way to play any army (except for the armies that don't have any summoning abilities). I'd like to run the following as a Grand Host of Nagash, and I know I'm a unit short of 2000 points. But, I also don't have any additional units to be summoned. So, would it even be worth painting all of what I have if my 2000 point army won't have any summonable units?

Does Arkhan give you anything special if he’s the General? If not, then make somebody else the General so you can get a warlord trait for the guy.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

No, he's just the biggest, baddest, meanest model I have in the army... and I think he has the most wounds. That's why I made him General.

He's also a massive target that your opponent will likely focus down as quickly as possible.

By making him general you're missing out on a Command Trait, which is a really big sacrifice to be honest.

The Legions of Sacrament bonus is pretty tops IMO. +1to cast/dispel is sweet. And you arent really missing out on anything by not taking it. Taking Sacrament means Arkhan HAS to be your general but you were already doing that and it gives him a command trait to buff your stuff. He buffs wizards I think.

Also Vampire spells are dope so having a vampire of some kind to cast one of those is a good idea. Soul pike or flight pinions on cavalry is great. The orb is fun but hard to use. Vile transference is just awesome. Spirit Gale is weird but can be great if you can roll the weird dice requirements for bonus effects.

I don't know if you have a Mortis Engine (usually people with Hexwraiths have a Mortis Engine) but it's another great addition.

Sacrament also gives you some neat artefacts to hand out specifically for negating shooting like -2 to be hit by it or a unmodifiable 4+ in addition to your saves to negate wounds suffered by shooting.

You mentioned Grave Guard, pretty much the only thing you couldn't do is use Grave Guard as battleline since that is GHoN specific, and they *would* be more effective in minimum units than just skrillingtons. However you don't have grave Guard as you mentioned so kind of a moot point.

Death is a wonky allegiance with a ton of abilities, battalions, artefacts and synergies. My least favorite part is that the individual legions require that if you take any mortarch, the army must ALSO include the Mortarch of that Legion and they must be the general, which inhibits list building a bit and l prevents you from using the coolest models (looking at you Olynder) with the rules bonuses that work best with your armies.
