Hi all,
Fancy making a bit of cash from your hobby? Miniature Wargames is a
UK-based monthly publication dedicated to science fiction, fantasy and historical wargaming, and we’re currently taking pitches for content.
What we’re looking for
Hobby:
- Painting tutorials: these can be of any sort, whether it’s a guide for painting a single miniature to masterclass level, advice for speedpainting an entire unit or an airbrush tutorial. Tutorials can also focus on themes – e.g. how to paint metals or zombie flesh tones – or something off the beaten track. For example, we recently ran an article on using putty and spray paint to create camo patterns on tanks.
- Modelling tutorials: This can focus on converting a single miniature, a unit, a vehicle, a giant model, etc. Ideally, an article should give useful advice that can be applied to other models – e.g. repositioning arms, sculpting beards and cloaks, using plasticard, etc. It can even be a tutorial for physically sculpting a miniature from scratch.
- Terrain modelling tutorials: single pieces, game boards, etc.
Gaming:
- Original rules: are you an aspiring game designer looking for somewhere to publish your rules? We want to hear from you! Rulesets need to be relatively brief – we can’t publish book length pieces. As a rough guide, about six pages would be the maximum length. Similarly, if you’ve got a homebrew scenario for a particular game, let drop us a line.
Miscellaneous:
- If you’ve got an idea not listed above, drop us a pitch anyway and we can take it from there.
Guidelines:
- Games Workshop/ Warhammer: As a general rule of thumb we don’t tend to cover Games Workshop. Our main focus is on the rest of the wargaming world and non-
GW rulesets. However, we will still consider Games Workshop-related pitches, although preference will be given to articles that are applicable to other games systems as well. For example, an article about making science fiction terrain that’s compatible with Warhammer 40,000 and other game systems, or a tutorial for converting Imperial Guard into soldiers from another setting will be more likely to be accepted than something focusing just on Games Workshop.
- Pictures: For any hobby-related pieces (painting/ modelling/ terrain) pictures are vital. Articles for these subjects will be considered on the strength and quality of their imagery. Pictures need to be a minimum of 300dpi and as large as possible. Tutorial images will need to be taken against a plain white background, except for scenic shots. For non-hobby pieces, please bear in mind that we will need to source imagery and art assets. As a result, if the genre or topic is too obscure we may not be able to publish your article.
- Original content: We’re only interested in fresh, original content. We won’t consider anything that has appeared elsewhere, either in other publications or on blogs, forum threads, social media pages, etc. If you want your own stuff shown off in the mag, see the notes on our Community Corner below.
- Advertorial: Miniature Wargames will not consider running advertorial pieces. Articles from businesses promoting their own products either directly or indirectly will not be considered.
- Scale: We’re happy to consider games from any scale.
Rates
Our current freelancer rate is set at £15 per page. See below for more information.
How it works
Send in your article pitches to our Miniatures Editor
james.winspear@warnersgroup.co.uk. If you’re sending in a pitch for a tutorial, please attach images of previous work. Tutorial pitches will be assessed on the quality of these images – both the models themselves and the photos. Light boxes are highly recommended. If the pitch sounds/ looks good, a page length and deadline will be agreed on. We will also send over a style guide, containing details for grammar, abbreviations. Please read this; articles that do not abide by our house style will be sent back for editing. Payment occurs two weeks after the magazine in which the article has appeared goes on sale.
Community Corner
Our news page contains a regular Community Corner column where you can show off what you’ve been working on. If you’ve got a model, unit or piece of terrain you want to see in print, send a high quality picture and a 300-word description of how you painted/ modelled it into the email address below. This is not a paid gig and anything you send in can have appeared elsewhere.
If you’ve got a pitch, or had any questions, just send an email to
james.winspear@warnersgroup.co.uk for more information. It’s better to email than to send a message over the forum, simply as we’ll be more likely to see it sooner.
