Have collected some bottle lids and want to use them to make some barrel terrain.

Tried a couple of times (once with used glue stick lids, and once with 4 small bottle lids). Turned out ok, but found gluing them together quite a challenge. Any recommendations? Tried both plastic glue and superglue - would it be advisable to scrape/slice the joining parts before attempting to glue?

Mentioned examples below - these were two successes among quite a few failures!

Rather than just gluing end on end I'd suggest some kind of bracing. Here's a really quick mock up with what I have lying around, it's not fixed in place or straight in any way but should explain the concept. Some matchsticks or strips of card or a strip of card running perpendicular to the rim would make your life way easier.
Personally I'd use hot glue for this mix of materials but super glue should work too. Plastic glue will not work on that type of plastic!
If you're looking to clean up or flatten the ends I'd suggest rubbing them on some sandpaper placed on a flat surface.
Sorry for sideways, just a quickie.

I've made a few bottle top barrels in the past. I found that using a sanding sponge on the edges of the caps flattens them out nicely so that its easier to glue them. It also slightly roughens the surface so the glue has a bit more to grip to as the edges you're gluing together can be pretty thin. I use regular super glue for gluing the caps together. The sanding sponges can be picked up pretty cheaply from most discount stores/ poundland etc and are useful for other things if you're making plastic kits/ terrain etc.
I also like to glue some coins on the inside of one of the caps so that they have a bit more weight to them and one side is then obviously the bottom.

I lightly sand the rims before gluing them together.

I also apply some loctite plastics bonder to the surfaces before the superglue. It helps with bonding stuff like the ptfe or polypropylene they use for bottlecaps.

epoxy resin - if you use loads (on the inside), it'll grip the screw threads so happy days.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!
