I finally got round to peeking into my copies of the Space Marine Codex and didn't see any detachments... are they still in 40k? Or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? Would they be in the Imperial Fists supplement for example?

Detachments are in the BRB.

There aren't faction-specific detachments like in 7th, detachment now means your Patrol/Battalion/Spearhead/etc. in the BRB and not the weird Decurion/Gladius stuff.

Ah okay! ha I should probably check my copy of the BRB... still have yet to look into that... got excited when I got my codices... thanks all!

Also worth mentioning that unlike in 7th where detachments granted direct benefits and special rules etc, detachments in 8th are there to fuel Command Points which you use to spend on stratagems - which trigger special rules in various phases etc (found in the codex, also there are some universal ones in the BRB)

It should be mentioned there are some specialist detachments (in various books) that upgrade normal detachments for cost, which are a little like the detachments of old, but not at the level of freebies it once was.
