So, I recently posted a link to an old homebrew thread I made, since it felt relevant.

If people want to comment on it, are they able to, since I, the creator of said proposed rule, intentionally brought it back? Or should a new thread be made for it, just linking back or copying the old thread?

Haha.

Depends entirely upon which mod sees it and how they're feeling that day.

The law of the land is that old threads must be closed and done again completely from scratch if there's so much as a month-long absence of posting, but again it depends on how the staff are feeling and how they feel about you personally rather than any sane policy or rule, as all mod decisions here do.

Q: What is 'thread necromancy' (aka 'threadromancy') and why is it bad?

A: Thread necromancy is posting in a thread that hasn't received any posts for a certain amount of time. Generally these threads have since moved off the front page of the forum and posting in them 'bumps' them back up to the front page.

It is considered poor forum etiquette because when a thread containing topical information is bumped back up to the front page of the forum it can be very confusing as to many users as it will seem like a brand new thread (if they don't look at the dates in the thread) but filled with now incorrect or outdated information. This often leads to further confused replies from other members and in general, not a very good reading experience for most. Beyond that, bumping a thread that most users are finished with back to the front page pushes all other current topic threads, that many more people are interested in, further down (or off) the first page of the forum.

Because of this, users are asked to refrain from posting in threads that have been dormant (haven't had any posts) for more than 3-4 weeks if the thread contains topical information at all. Topical information would include things like news, rumors, current events, and any discussion based on rules which are now obsolete (like outdated codices, for example). The only time it would be okay to post in one of these dormant threads would be to add vital new or missing information to the existing conversation. . .just posting your opinion on the topic would not qualify. Threads suffering from thread necromancy are typically locked by forum moderators in order to prevent further confusion being caused by the thread.

It is usually acceptable to post into dormant threads that aren't topical in nature, like modeling, painting, background discussion, etc, but if you are ever in doubt about whether it is appropriate to post in an older thread or not, please contact a moderator or administrator ahead of time to ask.

Also, to prevent unintended thread necromancy, please always check the dates on the forum posts you are replying to, especially when you've come across the post using the search function.

In the instance you have stated I would have said that either way really works but would suggest starting a new thread with a link back.

On parle toujours mal quand on n'a rien à dire.
