I'm looking for some help getting started with an eldar list. What units should I look into buying first if I'm starting an army?

Cheers!

Good decision to start Eldar.

I'd first start with a battalion and then expand.
A possibility are 3x 5 Dire Avengers or 3x 5 Rangers to start with.
I'd go with DA and take 2x 5 Dire Avengers and 10 to 20 Guardian Defenders with 1 or 2 weapon platforms.

As HQ, I'd take Farseer Skyrunner. She can support the army and has enough mobility to do so.
Another useful HQ is an Autarch (also with mobility) due to his supporting role (Path of Command).

From here you can expand in several ways: Dark Reapers, Serpents, flyers.

An alternative route is to start with Wraithguard and then expand to a Iyanden army.

This is all great advice. Only thing I have to add is remember that iyanden needs a decent amount of guardian support to make the wraithguard work

Craftworlds Eldar: 8500
Dark Eldar: 1000
Harlequins: 1000
Raven Guard: 1500
Tyranids: 1500

This is great advice. You want to get a battalion up and running so a farseers warlock and then 3 units of troops.
Dire avengers and guardians great as they come in plastic where as the rangers are fine cast which is sub par material.

The only thing Id add in terms of recommendation is a wave serpent. They are fantastic units and offer a lot of utility and loadout options.

Once you have your first battalion and a couple units play some low point games and work out what you enjoy doing in the game and what units you enjoy the look of most.. Elda faction are quite versetile so you can mostly build a list in any way and have the tools to possibly making it work.
Do you enjoy pushing up and trying to get into CC? Do you like long range heavy hitting fire power? Or do you like lots and lots of shuriken shredding everything in their path?

One thought to also consider is that whilst rangers are very good, they are currently only sold in finecast. Which means either dealing with finecast; converting or hunting down expensive metals (any popular unit becomes very expensive in metal very quickly).

Dire Avengers are modern plastics so going for them first means you can get your games and build your force whilst waiting for GW to update the other aspect warriors. Banshee are going out for individual pre-order next weekend.

Another quick add-on would be support battery squads.
I'd recommend 3-6 vibro cannons for decent fire support.
