Heyup one and all!
I've picked up the brush after nearly a decade away from the models, and I can agree with everyone else in the same situation by saying SO MUCH HAS CHANGED.
My partner bought me a Tamiya model car for my birthday last year and that sat on in the wardrobe for 8 months, to be unboxed last month and this really pushed my thirst for modelling through the roof! That model is almost complete, just waiting for some body colour paint to arrive, then once that's on it's transfers and assembly.
But this thirst will not be sated by one model car alone!
I decided to purchase some Ork Lootas and Burnas - in what now appears to be an older style of packaging, though I am not entirely sure of anything these days... - and some Storm Boyz as, much to my dismay, Warhammer Fantasy has ceased to exist! These are keeping me going considering the state of the world at the moment.
I'll be going back to my old haunt, Daemonhunters (or are they Grey Knights?) once things are back to normal.
Just thought I'd say hi to you all now I'm getting back up to speed and involved in a once loved hobby.
Hi all!

Hey there!
I’m in the same boat, back after 12 years or so haha. Yeah I agree with how much has changed! Good luck getting back into it though! I’m furiously trying to figure out new lore, and why Dark Eldar and Eldar seem to be cool with each other now!
I was the same as you when I heard WFB was replaced by AoS, but if it’s any consolation I’ve heard it’s coming back? Dunno how true that is though

Thanks for the warm welcome!
I'd love to see Fantasy make a return, that's what drew me into the whole GW universe in the first place. Similarly, I'm slowly getting to grips with the lore of AoS, but I'm really not sure which faction I want to roll - I love the aesthetic of the Ossiarch Bonereapers but the chaos and ork models are so good these days too!
Does anyone know of any good guides to bring me up to speed quicker in terms of both 40k and AoS?
Cheers gang, take it easy.

I came back a few months ago after last playing as a kid in 2nd Edition and it just blows my mind how different it is. Its alot more "zoomed out" in that I remember having a Squad sheet for each space marine squad, and within that squad you could spend a few points to give one of them a bionic eye to improve their shooting, and you used to shoot a vehicle and roll to see what kind of damage it caused. Now it seems a lot more of a Unit level game to speed things up.
I'd say the rule book (I think there is a free "Battle Primer" on the Games Workshop website that gives you the basics) is a good way to get started, and YouTube battle reports help you pick up the flow of the game and showcase different armies, their rules and certain tricks to use.

Any YouYube channels you’d recommend we take a look at? I’ve checked out a few but the majority seem to have really bad audio issues or nausea-inducing camera work haha

The ones I mostly watch are WintersSEO and TableTop Tactics.
WintersSEO is mostly narrative so its not all about having a fully optimized list and more about trying to make interesting battles.
Tabletop Tactics do a good section at the beginning to explain what all the units do which I find really useful (once you skip the stupid cinematic pan shots of the armies that always goes on for ages)
but yea, shaky camera work is pretty unavoidable , and i find most battle reports don't do enough to make it super obvious to the un-initiated which unit is actually shooting at which unit.
The other thing is an App called Battlescribe. its bit hard to get your head around at first, but you use it to build an army and then generate an army roster. It consolidates all the rules that apply to your units, based on what you chose and often tells you the specific book and page the rule came from.
the BEST resource I've ever found is a website that has all the rules and datasheets. It begins with W but I'm not sure what the rules are around naming it because it blatantly isnt GW approved, but I use it all the time even though I have the Codexs for my armies, Rule book and Chapter Approved because its just so concise and quick to use.

Thanks for the response! I'll check out the ones you mentioned
Thanks for the tip about the website, I can't get hold of the new one until the lockdown ends, so I'm just gonna paint models until I get chance to pick it up and hope I make an accurate force haha. The last one I have includes the Force Organisation Chart, that doesn't seem to be a thing anymore so I'm looking forward to seeing how army composition goes these days, as far as I can tell you just take what you want now lol!

Thanks for all the advice. I've been watching a lot of battle reports lately and they are helpful to contextualise a lot of the changes over the years that I missed out on.
I'm gonna invest in one or two of the army starter bundle boxes, so I guess my next question is; what paints would everyone recommend? I've got a handful of citadel paints and a few mlre Tamiya from my car models. The Tamiya paints are good for the range of metal tones I already have, so I can spruce things up a bit when necessary. I've heard a lot of good things about Vallejo paints, so what's the consensus?
Cheers again alll
