I'm getting into Legion and just got my starter box, will post pics when things get painted. I am wanting to do Empire and I don't know what to buy next.

All of the new player guides are outdated and don't include Shoretroopers or the new upcoming mini.

I'm wanting to play a newbie friendly army, so I know Vader is out, I just don't know if I should buy another starter box for the Stormtroopers or run 2 stormtrooper 2 shore trooper 2 mortar.

I need to be very careful in what I buy because this is one part hobby, one part physical therapy. I lost a lot of use in my hands and it is hard for me to paint, its why I'm going empire in the first place because of how easy they are to paint. I don't want to buy a lot of extra minis, I just want a good newbie list, that will help me learn the game that I can work on during the distancing.

Thank you all.

I don't play Imps but have played every single game against them, so this is written from the perspective of the opposition.

Shoretroopers are brokenly good, even with the nerf to their activation trick they are just silly good. The amount of firepower they lay down combined with red defence is awesome. I would highly recommend getting some!

All of the commanders available have their up and down sides, I would recommend finding one that you like most and building around them.
Krennic runs very well with a mix of Shore and Death troopers.
Palp and Vader are both expensive and not very newb friendly but are awesome when done well.
Veers really needs vehicles in the list and they are not the best being both expensive and easy to play out of the game.
Iden looks good and wants to run with a smaller elite army.
The generic commander... exists, cheap and cheerful buffer but never actually seen one on the table.

I will also make a plug for Legion on TableTopSimulator, there is a very active group playing and its not hard to find games and its great to try things out before buying them (also it means you can play the game without having to come into close proximity to humans!).

Thank you! I will get the simulator and play some later in the week!

So from what your telling me I'm going to want either Krennic or the new girl? I was looking at tourney lists and I'm basically seeing Krennic a squad of death troopers, one or two shoretrooper/mortor combo and 2-4 stormtroopers. Then snipers.

My next purchase is going to be another 70ish bucks. Its not going to be in a long while, but finding some of the paint for my mini's took me forever, so I wanted to get a plan asap. I honestly don't care if I go with either Iden or Krennic so much that I want to run the most newbie friendly relatively cheap army to build, that uses at least something from the starter box, and isn't terrible.

I would say play around with the commanders a bit before deciding, they will heavily effect your army composition so it is not a decision to make lightly (well unless you are going to just buy at least one of everything which seems to be what Legion players end up doing!). I think that those two are the easiest to get a handle on though, but Krennic really shines with lots of Death troopers (though he is still good other wise) and he is a support/buffer type commander. Iden is more of a point and click, beat stick type and will benefit from a more special forces style army.

Tournament lists are not going to show Iden in any prefusion as the box is not released for most of the world (some lucky devils did apparently get her before everything shut down) but yeah that is a pretty common list to see. One of the key things to Legion is to have as many activations as possible as the game is AA, so if you have more units than the opponent it gives you greater choice and flexibility. Both ST mortars and Scout snipers play the activation game at little cost and have some pretty good utility.

Another thing to bear in mind is that there are currently 3 boxes available to buff your normal stormies (Storm trooper upgrade, Specialist personnel and soon to be Inferno Squadron) and all of these can change the way Stormies work. A lot of people get the specialist box just for the medical for example.

For what you are after I would certainly get a box of shore troopers though, with that you have three/four core units which you need to have a legal army. the rest is really seasoning to taste. Have a play around on one of the squad builders and see what takes your fancy.

Veers and Krennic are very similar. I think Veers is much more straightforward to play; his only downside is his 2 pip command card requires vehicles, but there are plenty of options to replace it. He's just a cheap buffbot.

Krennic is more expensive and does a lot of similar things, several of which Veers does better. Krennic's advantages are pretty nuanced. He's technically weaker, but exploits game mechanics in ways that can make him well worth it, but he's hard to learn the game with.

I'd go 2x Storm/Shore/Mortar currently. Death Troopers are really good and key to making Krennic worth taking, but good with anyone. Bossk is also a solid addition and a scout team or two are still a must, even after nerfs.

Thank you both so much. I bought Veers, some Scouts, and the starter box. I'm not going to paint the rest of the scout squad or speeder bikes for now.

So currently I have 2 stormtrooper squads, Veers, and A sniper team that are 100% going in my list. This is my endgame with only barebones upgrades and room for improvement, I need to buy upgrades to do anything else, but this keeps me from buying too much extra.
