So I've recently got back into the hobby, and have a small force of space marines, all with various dark angel heraldry as there from the DV boxset I picked up a while back, and also some other pieces like a dreadnaught, rhino and more tac marines. My idea was to have a home brew, but the way iv modelled and painted them, they basically resemble the fallen. I am yet to pick up a codex yet, but I know that they have there own specialist unit within the chaos codex, however I want to run them as a whole fallen army (maybe loyalist) rather than just their specific unit attached to another army. What would be a good direction to go in? Could I just play with any loyalist rules, or even the Dark Angels Codex? I want to keep them relatively fluffy, so assumed the stealth strategem would suit them. Or do I play them as a renegade force within chaos? I am unsure how this would work (which legion etc), there not particularly spikey looking, just a bit war torn. I would like some pros and cons of playing as either chaos or loyalists, how this would fit in with the fluff, how I can use the models I currently have. I am currently on the final book of the dark angels omnibus so have some background on both DA and Fallen, theres just no mention of particular tactics in there as of yet, just heresey era stuff (Which I could potentially include if any armys still use similar tactics) and death guard as some of the fallen have aligned with them since, however thats far too deformed and spikey for my aesthetic iv got going. What other Legions have the fallen paired with, that would make sense, Alpha perhaps?

I've played with this army a bit before the whole virus hit and ran either two directions: using the Dark Angels codex or for Chaos Marines Alpha Legion. I mainly played the Alpha Legion version as I see the Fallen as having to be a bit more sneaky than usual to survive.

So what did your army consist of when running them as chaos? Did you find a particular detatchment worked better than others? And did you include a fallen squad too as an elite option? I feel like running with chaos is a cool way to go but would be wrong as none of my guys have any chaosy conversions

I wouldn't worry overly much about chaosy conversions unless you really want them to be there. As the Fallen fall out of the warp into different time frames, them being mutated or not is entirely to taste. Since they are still wearing their First Legion colors it is remarkably easy to run them as either chaos or imperials.

If playing them as a full battle-force rather than just a detachment in a chaos soup army I would advise simply using Alpha Legion's rules writ large. As mentioned above, it seems to be the best legion trait for simulating sneaky marines that hide their identities from the rest of the galaxy. I ran mine as two battalions and used chaos marines as a Fallen specialist detachment to keep the visually different marines slightly different rules, but it only worked to keep the specialist detachment from gaining legion traits and stratagems.

Ok thanks, that makes sense. Will have to look into getting a chaos codex then!
