Totally new to painting on the 3d surfaces.

2nd hand marines on order to start a salmanders army.

While I'm waiting I wanted to practice a bit of painting, so have started making a terain piece - the site of a chaos summoning that has been discovered and hit with mega melta fire by the Sallys, melting the collumns and sintering the ground.

I started with a textured plastic food tray, flipped it and used wood to reinforce it.
Next added 4 melted 'metal collumns' from cut and MAPGAS melted alcathene piping. Primed grey.

Hot glue for more 'melted metal', then the water curing expaning foam version of gorilla glue that I stripped the surface from with a wire wheel on the dremel once dry for more sintered bits on the surface and around the flows of molten metal. Primed white.
I'm in two minds as to whether to add remains of a skeleton hangin from the tallest pillar, altar remanents near the front short one or something else, or nothing.

It certainly has the melted appearance you are going for. To me though, it also looks a bit Tyranid-esque. The towers do anyway. I think it is because the towers are hollow.

It will be interesting to see where painting takes it.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

2/3 - Painting practice:

I bought some crappy dinosaurs from our local $2 shop for the princely sum of $3.50. (4pk)

All in a slightly rubbery coloured plastic with 1 light Zenithal coat of another colour.
Stripped them all with acetone.

Primed grey with etch primer in a can after removing the most eggrerious mould lines . . . (pic 1)

The pachyceohalosaurus has been by first practice over the last few days. (last pic) Learnt a lot by doing it. Might still tickle it a bit more and try clean up the claws and volume blending on the legs.

Have the raptor drying ready to start tomorrow (pic 3) tried a spray can zenithal. got one puddle - this is why I went for cheap learning . . .

3/3 - First Boys are here!

Best news! The first of 2 sets of Marines arrived today (pic 1)

Dude with power sword (pic 2) and dude with chainsword I assume are srgnts? (pic 3)
The guy with the power claw a captain? (Pic 4)
9x standard tactical marines with bolter
4x Devastators? with rocket launchers (please do jump in to correct me)

Now I'm hopeful that the shine I can see round the joints is superglue rather than plastic weld, and that I'll be able to freeze and then soak in simple green to be able to separate the parts so that I can re do them with magnets, and make it easier to do a high quality paint job on the tight areas.
