How do?

Nice chitchatchinwag thread about Star Wars. As the title suggests, I want to know what ships, weapons, characters and plots you might like to see be brought out of Legends and back into Canon. But, much as I know some wish it would be so, we have to work around the current canon.

I want to discuss this topic because whilst the current opinion of Disney’s offerings are somewhat mixed, they have shown they’re not shy to cherry pick cool stuff from the old EU.

In Rebels alone we see the TIE Defender, Quasar Class and Grand Admiral Thrawn slightly rejigged. And many of the visuals in the movies have similarly delved into the archives.

And, because it’s cool to explore the imaginations of others? I want to hear about how you might go about that.

Golden Rule? And only because all that can be said has been said, and we need to collectively move on? Please. Don’t turn this into a dunking on the sequels thread.

Mara Jade. Have her die defending Luke's failed school.

Uuuuuuuuhhhhhh...... honestly, as much as I loved the EU I don't really miss that much of it. Part of that is that it was already in the toilet post Vong, but a lot of the stories were pretty disposable and more about enjoying more Star Wars in the moment than any meaningful additions to the Canon.

I'd say this was more an issue with how the EU continued to revolve things around the same basic group of characters who seemed to be the only people in the galaxy capable of getting anything meaningful done. And the characters who did useful things that weren't those characters were those characters wives/husbands/kids/best buddies. There are a few stand outs sure, but on the whole I think the EU was too tied down by how increasingly managed it was as time went on, especially post prequels. It lost a lot of its early flair and creativity (which had problems too but imo was more enjoyable) and became an executive board project.

I'd quite like to see the Rogue and Wraith squadron storylines (and characters) brought into canon, with whatever modifications are needed to make them work.

Pilot/commando and commando/pilot units are cool, as are the likes of Garik "Face" Loran, Piggy, Corran Horn, Mirax (and Booster) Terrik, Ooryl Qrygg, etc, etc.

*EDIT* - Noticed a typo.

Talon Karrde.

Would fit right in with the Mandalorian I reckon.

Also, another vote for Booster Terrik.

Agreed. Also totally blanked on Corran and all the Squadron stuff. I loved those stories and they're one of the few I kept when I trimmed my EU collection. They're a good example of what I mean when I say meaningful additions to canon. Like they're good stories, but whether or not they "count" has little impact on anything else as far as I'm concerned.

Xizor, Mara Jade, Talon Karrde - the Ysalamiri. Joruus C'Boath.

Thrawn vs Zaarin.

Exar Kunn haunting Yavin 4.

The Sith War, with the Mandalorians facing off against the warbeasts - that is way too epic to ignore.

The Battle of Mon Calamari.

Kyle, Jan and the valley of the Jedi.

Republic Commando. Love - that - game. Big - time.

Small scale: Some element from the Rogue Squadron books, even if its just name drops here and there of the various interesting characters those books featured, it'd be neat if Ysanne Isard or Zsinj showed up again, though I'd prefer if the former was more rounded and less a cackling supervillain.

Large scale: The Legacy Era (that is, the 130+ ABY setting) is really intriguing to me. Some of it feels like what some authors thought the clone wars era was like before the prequels came out, and others a grungier, almost post-apocalyptic take on the star wars galaxy. I really liked the Imperial Knights.

Joke scale: One Shot's Star Wars campaign, from the crew, to their improbably out-of-scale skipray blastboat, the BHIKKE work week, the hundreds of bounty hunters they made up, the many bothans they accidentally killed while getting the Death Star plans, all of it.

Rogue Squadron..... enough said really. It would make a great series like Piece of Cake or something. Star Wars works best when you slot it into different, well-established genres just in Star Wars.

Rogue One is probably better than Dark Forces, but the Moldy Crow is probably my absolute favorite ship design.

The novel 'Kenobi' was a solid read, and a good look at some of his early time settling in on Tatoine, with nothing that would really interfere with current canon - at least until the Kenobi mini series comes along.

Another vote for Rogue/Wraith squadron, although the current canon's Wedge is a very different character to the one in those books.

Also, while I know it wasn't to everybody's taste, I actually really enjoyed the Yuuzhan Vong story arc. Forcing the Jedi to adapt to fighting against an enemy that couldn't be felt or affected by the Force was an interesting break from the endless stream of warlords with superweapons.

Honestly, after everything that came after it I feel like the Yuuzhan Vong arc really wasn't that bad. It suffered from "this is an alien concept to Star Wars" more than anything. Which isn't to say it was a great arc, but I view it as more of the start of the downward slop rather than the cliff the EU eventually fell off.

Personally, I'd remove Kyles efforts to get the DS plans and go with the rest; General Mohc, the Jedi Valley. Never knew what happened to the character after that, but those two stories are very strong.

And yes, the Moldy Crow is rather fantastic.

Love that book! It should at least be a guide for whatever they do going forward.

Never got round to any of the Yuuzhan Vong stuff( although Rogue Planet was somehow connected? ), but from what I did see of the art and the odd wiki piece, they seemed slightly too heavy for Star Wars. But thats just from first impressions.

It definitely had some darker themes than was the norm for the EU, although they had been leaning that way prior, with the awful Dark Nest trilogy as well. Then the series that came after tried to stick with the dark themes, but with more young adult level writing, and it didn't work very well.
