I'm not a new player, however I've struggled to make a list work in 9th edition and was looking to see if I could get some inspiration or guidance from the community. Here's a list of my collection.
HQ's
Abaddon
1 Lord discordant
2 Demon princes
3 Terminator Characters
4 jump pack lords/sorcerers
1 sorcerer/Master of possessions
1 dark apostle
1 lord w/ Thunder Hammer
Troops
Around 50 marines - 15 chainswords ( Could double as zerkers?),25 bolters, 10 special weapons
60 cultists
Elites
20 Possessed
10 Terminators (Weapon options suck so they are massively overpriced)
20 Rubric Marines
Fast Attack
10 Raptors
5 Warp talons
Heavy Support
4 Squads of havocs - chaincannons, lascannons, missile launchers and autocannons
3 Obliterators
3 Maulerfiends
Dedicated Transport
2 Rhinos w/Combi-bolter + Havoc launcher
I also have a Knight Castellan which I use from time to time but haven't written any proper lists with yet, despite its points reduction with the new edition.
I usually lean towards an alpha legion/red corsairs soup for anyone interested, however any idea would be appreciated.

Sure I'll bite. Without knowing your meta or loadouts for the termies I'll leave those alone. One reason you may be struggling is simply that heretics is not in a great place right now unless your souping into DG.
Anyway heres a list to consider:
Strike Force (12 CP)
Alpha Legion: Battalion -3
HQ
lord discordant- baleflamer, WAA- master of diversion 200
master of possession, mos, infernal power/cursed earth, mutated invigoration 95
TROOPS
11 cultists 66
10 cultists 60
10 cultists 60
ELITES
20 possessed, mos 400
HS
3 obliterators,mos 315
maulerfiend- tendrils 140
maulerfiend- tendrils 140
Patrol 0: 1k Sons- cult of scheming
HQ
winged DP- talons, gaze of fate, warp time, chaqithls theorem,warlord- otherworldly 200
TROOPS
18 rubric marines- weaver of fates 324
TOTAL 2000
Command Pts: 9 Less: 1 (we are alpharius) +2 (theorem)
So this is XX legion/Tsons.. one of my favorite combos. It doubles down on the more busted parts left in the factions.. namely concealed oblits, possessed horde, risen obsec rubrics horde, backed up by a distraction carnifex trio of disco + maulers. This gives you plenty of concealment, 2 strong push elements and a forward deploying scoring. Cultists occupy space perform actions etc. The DP is not typical Tsons hes built for fighting and durability with 3++ invuln and a 'free' strat typically conceal or cacophony.
You have lots of redundancy for your possessed/oblits in the form of MOP mutated invigoration + gaze of fate. Both rubrics and possessed can be seriously next leveled with cursed earth/weaver or even familiar into delighful agonies on possessed.
Lastly seeded strategy power allows the rubrics/DP to fall back from combat and shoot/charge.The list has good resistance to abhor the witch secondary other than the MOP making that one a tougher sell for your opponent.
Idea is fairly obvious.. risen the rubrics when possible while master of diversion lets you redeploy your key units making the list very alpha legion-y and hard to out deploy. I put MoD on the disco because I feel you want to have the option to redeploy the possessed but also possibly the oblits/MOP more than the faster engines. But you may find this could be reversed too. First turn the possessed are warp timed, possibly cursed earthed (if not hanging back with oblits or taking infernal power/familiar-> agonies) and the daemon engines rush. Oblits cacophony, rubrics infernal fusilade (dont forget then can heroic intervene up to 12" too if needing to reach another objective). MOP- infernal power might be preferable to cursed earth here.. just something to consider.
If your meta is drenched in anti tank like triple erads or nasty things like drop pod grav etc like mine is then I would consider losing the maulers/disco combo for some renascent infiltrated/strategic reserves counter strike such as lord + cbplas chosen and reaper chain havocs. These bring the benefit of turning on ambush a bit more besides just on the oblits. Alternately and maybe a bit more on the fun side you could consider losing the daemon engines for 2x5 berzerkers and 2x5 chain havocs (or maybe csm) and put one of each in 2 rhinos. Gives you redundancy with obsec in more push units.
If you had some spawn I would actually suggest them. For other considerations a backfield firebase unit that can score would be nice.. for example forgefiend if you have the guns magnetized. Or maybe even a deredeo even as damn costly as they are. Not necessary just a thought.
Anyway thats what I got good luck.

Ok that was actually really helpful, souping with TS is not something I considered, and 18 rubrics might actually get some work done, especially with AL shenanigans going on.
My most common opponents are:
-custodes with termie teleport homer
-white scars wiith 3 indomitus boxes e.g. 9 eradicators, 9 outriders, 9 blade guard and lots of assault intercessors
-BA with 15 DC and 2*8 SG
-Blackheart drukhari- triple ravager, triple flyer
-typical TS
AL is typically good against BA but everything else is kind of a losing battle.
My mate has 2 spawn he never uses so I can probably get my hands on them, and my 3rd mauler isn't painted yet and I'm considering making him a forgefiend. I'm also considering getting a helforged leviathan but I'm waiting for the FW rules drops.
Thanks for the advice.

Glad you found it useful. It looks like that sample list has the tools although I can't comment on custodes since I haven't ever actually faced them.
You can wrap those oblits with possessed and be sitting midfield wrecking havoc or even go wide after a redeploy to hate on early assault units. I feel like maxing the possessed's durability will be key either way.
Meanwhile the daemon engines are your weakest link but they are also disposably costed fast and threatening. Msu mechanized zerks/havocs would be a possible alternative although I think it might be a sidegrade. Not seeing much else that would do as well vs what you listed but maybe someone else will.
Full squads of spawn are great in Tsons due to their strat and anti PEQ weapons. Singles I'd only suggest if you aren't using cheap troops already.
Agree on the Leviathan. Its a seriously good unit but costing what a knight does sucks. Otoh it would be a great firebase and a very serious ambush target requiring no further investment in buffs. Plus it would typically take more than even 9 erads to put down. Not friendly though.. I quit playing mine awhile back due to complaints.

OTOH?
Another thing I am considering getting is terminators with combi-plasmas, as you can deep strike them and EC them for 40 plasma shots and delete just about anything.
With the new buffs to wounds they would be really quite scary.
Or convert my castellan into a crusader and give it 2 avenger Gatling cannons. It provides a stronger firebase than a contemptor, but for more points and can't be buffed.

On the other hand otoh..
plasma termies are ok. Better in a month. I feel oblits are just better though and both want psych, EC, rerolls etc.
Not mutually exclusive but the buffs are. If you have the bits already slot them in as a second wave with or without support. They won't provide immediate threat like the engines will but they are a reactive threat. If you don't have the cbplasmas or conversion bits available then I wouldn't go out of your way to get some.
Chaos knights the detachment changes really hurt. Seems like too much to include one now.
