Subject: Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought question
|
 |
Spawn of Chaos
|
Hello everyone, I have a Leviathan Dreadnought and I’m looking at different configurations for it. I’m looking at the grav-flux bombard and it seems awfully good, so naturally I think I’m missing something. Here are the relevant rules:
Heavy D3 18” range, S9, AP-5, D2
Blast. If the target model is a MONSTER, VEHICLE or TITANIC then the amount of Damage suffered from successful attacks becomes 5 per hit. For every five models in the target unit, add D3 to the number of attacks made by this weapon.
This seems more “good at everything” than weapons tend to be. If a Leviathan Dreadnought with 2 GFB were to shoot at a hoard of 30 ork boyz, am I right thinking that would total 14D3 attacks that get maxed out to 42 shots because of the “blast” ability? That, on average, would kill 29 of them.
And it’s also doing an average of 11 wounds to a Land Raider, and gets even better with large vehicle squadrons like Kestelan Robots (it would kill around 4 of them if the unit started with 5 or 6)
Other than the lackluster range, am I missing something? I’ve been using mine with Butcher Cannons, and this loud out would actually save 20 points.

You are right, but there are new FW rules on the horizon, and it might not be as good as it is right now.

Your maths looks correct to me. Blast doesn't differentiate between whether the number of shots comes from the weapon type directly, or its abilities - it just basically says "don't bother rolling the dice". However, looking at the datasheet, I don't think you're allowed to take two grav-flux bombards, since you're only allowed to swap one of the siege claws for one.

The damage output is pretty hilarious with 9e blast rules.
The main issue is still the range. It will fire once, get tagged in melee, and never fire again. I could see it being a fun pick if you run one grav-flux, one siege claw for 365 pts. But at that point I think I'd rather pay a little more for something like a thermal cannon knight.

The datasheet I’m looking at, says:
A Hellforged Leviathan may replace one siege claw and one meltagun for one of the following weapons (or it can replace both siege claws and both meltaguns for two of the following):
And then it goes on about weapon options, GFB included.
That is, admittedly, not the official datasheet and was gotten from.. somewhere else. So I’m sure it isn’t free of error, but it’s been pretty reliable in the past. If the part in the parentheses isn’t in the real datasheet, please let me know. I wouldn’t knowingly play incorrectly, aka cheat.

@SuperReady It was FAQ'd.
Page 22 – Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought, Wargear Options Change the second wargear option to read: ‘• A Hellforged Leviathan may replace one siege claw and one meltagun for one of the following weapons (or it can replace both siege claws and both meltaguns for two of the following):’

Ah, that explains it. That is pretty much super-wonky, then.
Tagging the Dread in melee seems like a good counter, considering that Blast weapons can't be fired in Engagement Range. With that in mind, taking the two GFBs seems like too much of a gamble - I'd either keep a melee weapon or take the soulburner/butcher cannon, so that it's not rendered completely useless by a wadge of Grots (yes, I've decided that's the correct collective noun for them).

Unless you play IH and make the dread a character, and give him the student of history warlord trait, which allows him to pile in in any direction, away from enemy models.

I mean, this is probably only going to keep being a thing for less than two weeks now...

Wait, IH is a valid Legion Tactic now?

Not Hellforged ones, they can't. Being pedantic for humour, but that's what was being discussed in this thread
