Hey, the tyranids are fun to play, that's for sure. But on the competitive side, unfortunately they are bottom tier at the moment. The list building depends alot about the hive fleet you choose to play (competitive ones are Kraken, Kronos, Behemoth and Leviathan), but you could also make your own scheme with psychic awakening book. I've got no clue about hierodules in the new compendium book, but as they are Super heavy detachment, they'll cost cp to include, so probably you should avoid them.
Here's some list building ideas;
Kraken
- a melee focused army with speed to take on opponent turn 1. The optimal set include swarmlord, broodlord (or two), 40x genestealer, and some assets to deal with aircraft. You could fill up the list with more bodies (hormagaunts), or monsters (for antitank). The tyrant guard and venomthropes are also good addittion to protect swarmlord and genestealers.
Behemoth
- another melee army, their army-wide bonus of reroll charge is a nice tool to have. A solid list could consist of 60x hormagaunts with trygon transport. A very much like the Kraken, the swarmlord, broodlord, genestealer, Warriors, and carnifex, are all good options.
Leviathan
- they have the army-wide 6+ feel no pain for all units, which gives your units more resilience. If you list-tailor your army to include only multiwound models, your opponent is going to have some hard time chewing all the wounds. A good list could include hive tyrant, Warriors, and other monsters. But even the gaunts can be good.
Kronos
- their army-wide bonus is reroll ones to-hit when shooting, and not moving. So, their good picks are anything that shoots (exocrines, hive guard, tyrannofex, biovores), and another good pick is a tervigon with masses of termagaunts (some with devourers). They also have good psychic, so you'll might want to include zoanthropes. They are one of the tyranids top tier, but i'm not convinced about static gunline in 9th edition, when games are won by capturing objectives.
