Like other Black Templars list just posted, I'm thinking through future lists and playstyles. I've been playing Night Lords in 9th edition Crusade, which I've structured as a light infantry and ambushing force. Looking to mix it up with the following list, much of which might be able to port to 30k if I ever play:
~1992 points, 9 CP
Patrol 1:
Warpsmith:
- Relic: Axe of the Forgemaster
- Combi-bolter
Troops:
- 5x CSM (Sgt: Powerfist, Combi-bolter; 3x CSM w/ chainsword, bolt pistol; 1x CSM w/ Reaper Chaincannon)
- 5x CSM (Sgt: Powerfist, Combi-bolter; 3x CSM w/ chainsword, bolt pistol; 1x CSM w/ Reaper Chaincannon)
Elites:
- Helbrute (Helbrute Hammer, Twin Heavy Bolter)
- Helbrute (Helbrute Hammer, Twin Heavy Bolter)
Heavy:
- Sicaran Venator, Heavy Bolter Sponsons
- 3x Obliterators
Transport:
- Chaos Rhino (Havoc Launcher, 2x Combi-Bolter)
- Chaos Rhino (Havoc Launcher, 2x Combi-Bolter)
Patrol 2:
Chaos Lord:
- Power Fist, Combi-Bolter
- Warlord: Siege Master
Troops:
- 5x CSM (Sgt: Chainsword, Combi-Bolter; 3x CSM w/ bolter; CSM w/ Heavy Bolter)
- 5x CSM (Sgt: Chainsword, Combi-Bolter; 3x CSM w/ bolter; CSM w/ Heavy Bolter)
- 5x CSM (Sgt: Chainsword, Combi-Bolter; 3x CSM w/ bolter; CSM w/ Heavy Bolter)
Elites:
- Helbrute (Helbrute Hammer, Twin Heavy Bolter)
Heavy:
- 5x Havocs (Sgt: Chainsword, Combi-Bolter; 4x CSM w/ Missile Launcher)
- 5x Havocs (Sgt: Chainsword, Combi-Bolter; 4x CSM w/ Missile Launcher)
Conversion:
- Thinking of converting Tor Garradon and Iron Father Feirros to the different HQs
- Using Iron Circle Automata as the Helbrutes because they look dope.
- Will try to find 30k Mk III helmets and backpacks for the infantry.
- May convert Aggressors instead of Shadowspear Obliterators to mix it up.
Pros:
- Diversity of anti-tank via the Obliterators, Venator, Helbrute Hammers, and Havocs
- Lots of Heavy Bolters with which to wear down Marines. Heavy Bolter -1 AP gets a lot of mileage out of IW legion trait.
- Flex: Havocs can handle both infantry and vehicles
- Flex: Warpsmith can support a Helbrute blob, or the Venator
- Venator would benefit well from Warpsmith and Iron Warrior stratagems.
- Helbrutes and Rhino-transported marines skirmish in the mid-board so the back-line can hold and throw lethality downfield.
Cons:
- Not a tremendous amount of melee
- T1 Venator loss would hurt. Desire to hide it behind terrain also means it would not be firing at full effect (flat 6 damage) first round.
- HQs are babysitters rather than beatsticks.
- List may be CP hungry to support the Havocs, Venator, and Obliterators
I know this is distinct from Daemon Engine Iron Warriors. How do you think it would feel and look on the tabletop? Would it do okay in a light competitive setting (our friend group tends to max/min a bit)?
