Subject is the question. Can a magus or patriarch use its familars to unquestioning loyalty on itself? I can't imagine a situation where it might want to but the any friendly clause usually includes itself as its not excluding other model

So I guess you could have a situation where you already made the unwise decision to put a wound on your Magus instead of your familiar. (maybe because you thought they could tank it better with their superior armour save). Your 'unit' (Magus + familiar) then fails a save against a melta weapon. You would normally be forced to allocate this to the wounded Magus, killing them. However, you want to declare that the unit is within 3" of itself so that it can use to Unquestioning Loyalty rule to try to pick the familiar to be slain instead of putting wounds on the Magus?

A lot of people claim that they never play by Rules as Intended, but to me this a textbook example of a situation where it is blatantly obvious that it is not supposed to work that way. Don't do this.
