Mantic have started a beta play test of their firefight rules. Rather than modify the existing 1.0 rules which were a hack of the warpath rules, they've upscaled deadzone and added to that.
You can read the release announcement here:
https://www.manticgames.com/news/firefight-second-edition-public-playtest/
A little recap here:
https://www.manticgames.com/news/mantic-fest-recap-firefight-public-playtest/
And part one of the designers notes here:
https://www.manticgames.com/news/firefight-playtest-designer-notes-part-one/
I have to say it looks really interesting, and nice to see it's got a lot of beta playtest time to get ready before the official release (some time early 2022).
The rules are designed to play quickly. The play test is currently targeting 1000pts, which gets you 50-100 models I think, depending on what mix of vehicles you take.
The Facebook group has a link to the second iteration of the beta rules which mostly has wording tweaks, but does have the asterian list too. GCPS should get released in the next month or two (I'm guessing).

Rules look good so far and much better than the first version

I've never actually played the first version of firefight, but these seem fun.
Does anyone think that firefight getting an update will have an impact on the mass battle warpath version?

I don't think so for the moment. Mantic have basically said that how well firefight does will decide how much effort they put into the sci-fi range. If it does badly, I assume that future deadzone releases will stick with resin. If it does well we'll get several hard plastic releases.
I would assume that if firefight does well, we'll see new warpath rules 1 to 2 years later (with a open beta in the middle). Firefight should get released 2022, with some model releases (probably a hard plastic infantry + vehicle list, but just speculation at this stage).
I've got a long list of small changes for warpath that I'd like to see, I just need to put them into a coherent document!

At some point I'll put it together - I'll try to remember to add it here too. I'm trying to use my time to build firefight forces at the moment. Put together two 1k armies for a game today. Hopefully I'll finish a 3rd over the next few weeks and add some options to all. Got a mountain of scenery to build too!
I think a lot of players are waiting for GCPS to be released, which I think will happen with the next release of the rules (which I think will happen first weekend of June).

I for myself started to prepare Asterians and GPCS at the beginning of the year
so of course now I wait for it to try those first before I may prepare other forces or proxy them

Asterians came out at the beginning of the month, and GCPS should be available soon...

I hope the new Firefight succeeds so we can get more stuff related to Warpath.

Mantic have said there will be some new models with the official release of the rules, some time early next year. They haven't said what models, what armies, or how many models though.
Bets are high it's at least one hard plastic kit and a few resin ones.
I would hope for two hard plastic kits for two different armies to make a new starter box.
